The May Day bank holiday maybe moved to October – and could be called Trafalgar Day. Ministers want to switch dates to boost the flagging internal tourism industry.
Instead of the first Monday in May, the Government aims to place the new national day in late October – probably on the first Monday of schools' autumn half-term.
Its intention is to celebrate all that is good about Britain, and it could be called UK Day. Ministers are also considering Trafalgar Day, to mark the anniversary of Britain's greatest sea victory in the battle on October 21, 1805.
Tourism Minister John Penrose will launch a full public consultation soon.

Trafalgar Day would be fantastic, but the boy's in Brussles will probably veto it as being anti French and anti european, I sound like some doddery old so and so but kids need propper hero's like Nelson as apposed to footballers and singers etc.

I think the Government should re-introduce Empire Day. 24th May display the flag etc. That would really get up Brussels bottoms. completed..... Endeavour Longboat, San Francisco 2, Virginia 1819

I've just been watching a Fred Dibnah DVD celebrating the Victorian Engineers who were instrumental in the development of the British Empire. I feel we should celebrate the great men and women of our past and remind the British people of how proud they should be in their achievements. Mike T

Actually Guys
You probably wont believe this but the EU has been nagging the UK to let the workers have more holidays off as we have the lowest number of holidays of any EU country. Governments from the 1980's since have fought this on the grounds that it will be economically damaging for the UK. Mind you Germany who gets 5 extra days a year off than the UK don't seem to be doing do bad. Also don't forget that the EU is responsible for a lot of the protective Employment legislation that we enjoy as well as responsible for the time in service to qualify for workers protection cut from 24 months to 12 months. The minister who stood up last month spouting how they were going to lift the dead hand of red tape? well that wont happen as all the things he wanted rid off, compensation for loss of job, pregnancy rights etc, are all EU legislation and untouchable.
