Hi shipmates
Referring to issue 38, page 10, I've worked out step 1 which my case is 11 rows.
Step 2 requires to measure the gap at each frame and transfer that measurement to the yellow boxes on the chart.
In my case, dividing that number by 11 will give me the width of the plank at each frame on row 11.
This is where I get confusedConfused.
As I move down the chart with each completed row, would I be correct to assume that I have to take another measurement at each frame for that particular row and divide by the number of the row I am working on?
I.E: After finishing row 10,would I take the measurements again and divide by 9 as that would be the next row to lay. Thereafter, dividing by 8, then 7, then 6, etc.
Sorry that I can't explain this any better but the instructions don't (unless I've misunderstood) explain this point too clearly for me.
Also, while I'm asking,in issue 39, again the magazine doesn't mention which way round the stern post (part 56) should be fixed as there is a small taper along its length. Does the thickest or the thinnest end go down to the gallery support?
Happy building

Correct, as you lay each row you need to re-take the measurement and divide by the number of rows laid, obviously each time moving on one row.

Regarding the stern post, its widest end is at the bottom of the keel as per the photo in steps 9/17/18, and it should be installed so that its width aligns with the width of the real keel, in effect it looks like a continuation of the real keel that runs down the stern.

Hi Tomick
Thanks for for the re-assurance on that. Now I can get on with no worries. It's just that when I read the instructions initially, I thought that each row had to be divided by the total number of rows being laid and it was only whilst laying the first row that I was musing over the instructions again and thought "That can't be right, I'd end up with each row getting getting narrower and narrower until they disappeared up their own ***********!!"LOL
Well thanks again, and by the way, your build diary is looking good now. It's good to know that the hull planking is finally almost finished and we can get on to the more interesting work.
Happy building

Hi Plankers,
If it's any help I measured the gaps at each former, divided by the number of planks left and cut each plank to the same dimensions. Only the last plank: that against the garplank was re-measured and trimmed to fit. This worked shipmates and only the one calculation.

My digital caliper was enabled me to work to 100th of a mm if I wanted to but was not necessary. A few 10ths of a mm was ample. The +s & -s even out.

ALDI ARE DOING A DIGITAL CALIPER FOR £7.99 SINCE YESTERDAY. YOU WILL NOT REGRET INVESTING

One of these and my David's plane has revolutionized my planking.

I also created a spreadsheet in Excel to do the calculation if any shipmate wants a copy.

"Be a planker not a plonker" Sorry this site wont let me attach an Excel file!!!!Angry So you will have to send me your e-mail if you want a copy of the spreadsheet.Blushing
