ModelSpace Build of the Year 2017 Entry.

The Queen Elizabeth-class battleships were a class of five super-dreadnoughts of the Royal Navy commissioned in 1915–16. The lead ship was named after Elizabeth I of England. These battleships were superior in firepower, protection and speed to their Royal Navy predecessors of the Iron Duke class as well as preceding German classes such as the König class, although the corresponding Bayern-class ships were competitive except for being 2 knots (3.7 km/h) slower. As such, the Queen Elizabeths are generally considered the first fast battleships.

The Queen Elizabeths were the first battleships to be armed with 15-inch (381 mm) guns, and were described in the 1919 edition of Jane's Fighting Ships as "the most successful type of capital ship yet designed."[1] They saw much service in both world wars. HMS Barham was lost to U-boat attack in 1941, but the others survived the wars and were scrapped in the late 1940s.

Barham is important to me as my Grandfather (now 98) served on her for a short time prior to the war. Famously Barham collided withe the Destroyer HMS Duchess in the early part of the war. My Grandfathers youngest brother perished on Duchess aged just 19.

This build will be the Trumpeter 1/700 scale kit with 2 White Ensign etch sets and Artwox deck overlays.

Oh I cant imagine doing railings in 1/700. The ones I did in 1/200 drove me nuts. I have surgical loupes I can use that give a highly magnified field of view, but I still wouldnt do a 1/700 ship.It would end up a crumpled mess on the floor. And I would be a crumpled mess right next to it

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you everybody for the interest. lets get this underway then...

First decision is full hull or waterline. I am going full hull. The hull went together with no issues.

Rear deck installed next before installation of the meany hull guns.

The first etch goes on the bulkheads that need fitting with the upper deck

The rear gallery was then added before priming the hull and paintings.

Looking great Jase, this looks a lovely model kit and the best of luck in the comp! It doesn't matter how many times I've seen the footage of the poor Barham as she rolled over and her magazines went up, it still brings on a wave of emotion imagining all those poor sailors who must have been trying to clamber up her keel to save themselves.
Best of luck again!

Wood deck laminate has now been added. its a bit tricky at this scale. You only get two attempts then you have lost the adhesive backing. There were lots of very tiny holes that needed pushing through prior to fitting.

The deck fits really nicely and it looks great once on.
