Hi again shipmates I've accidently put a dent into the the hull planking on the side that I've just completed and wondered if anyone knew of a way to remedy it without fitting a new plank or using filler. daffy09

If its a gentle dent ie smoothly curved as opposed to sharp straight edges try damping it down & applying heat, the steam generated should bring it out again. Rob Nolli Illigitimi Carborundum!!!Current Builds: HMS Victory, SV Thermopylae

Thanks Dontshootme, Your little tip worked a treat. I moistened a cloth, laid it over the affected area and with a steam iron held just off the surface, squirted steam onto the cloth. I did this over three short periods as I was worried that I might disturb the adhesive in the surrounding areas, but I needn't have worried as all went well. It swelled a little more than expected but after leaving it to dry naturally, just a little fine sanding was all that was required to finish the job. Thanks again for the tip. Happy building Daffy09

The best way to tackle dents is not to get them. I am taping serial box card to the planking on the side I am not working on. The other way is to rest the hull on foam of some sort and keep the bench free of tools and pins as these are usually the culprits.
If the dents are very bad then filler may be the only answer. I make my own with dilute pva and sanding dust. This usually comes out close to the colour of the plank and is almost invisible when sanded. However it does not take stain if you are going down that route.
