BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin Me again. The Xebec is heading towards completion....just a few more jobs to do. Must fit and complete the sails, some running rigging, plus a Muslim flag used for a trading Xebec. I am thinking of using the old Muslim flag, (New moon plus star) plus the dove of peace (Dove bearing olive branch) opposite star in top RH corner. This in red and white.
This seems an apt version, as, at the time, the Muslim and Jewish religions were the same, and the people were one. Any thoughts, anyone ?

The rigging was fairly hard to do, as all the belaying points were sketchily shown on the examples I used (Pinterest). The only way I saw to do the fore and main boom sheets, were leading them to do a traveller from gunnel to gunnel, with a suitable block attached. This sheet can be let out (Running) and hauled close in (Beating). All the sails were led on the outside of the mast shrouds, as I do not think the full sized boats ever had them inside, at least not under normal use.

Oh yes, I see that I must make sweeps for the vessel, to hang on the outside, as well as a set of oars for the Jolly boat. Can anyone suggest anything else I should do ?

The carvings are fairly unconventional, with the school of whales on the sides, plus a kraken on the stern. The figurehead is a somewhat shaky rendition of Ashtaroth, the Nubian version of the god of laughter and love.

I think it looks absolutely brilliant! (you know that I'm building something similar, but I'm much further behind on the build. you've given me something to refer to and to aspire to! thanks!)

Hi RichieG

Glad you like it ! The build, however, started as a "Chapman Xebek", with the only plan being the free one uploaded to "Pinterest" as I am a relative newbie to ship models. This has absolutely no construction details supplied, and on further investigation, proved to be only a hull plan published in the 1700,s, I think,by Chapman. The model "grew and grew" over the last six months or so, and unfortunately bears only a passing resemblance to anything real. I enlarged the drawing by about 2,5 times A4 size, and found many errors. I studied all the thumbnails published by "Pinterest", plus did all the rigging to what I think was "right". The model was completely scratchbuilt, the only thing "bought" was the anchor, which was a modern one. I filed off the crossbar, and replaced it with a wooden one. I used the "Cornwall Model Boat" reference to order a whole lot of bits and pieces following the excellent recommendations I got from "Model Space". However, our Postal Service is execrable here in SA, I only received the parts after a six months delay by the SA Customs, nevermind that it was posted "Priority Airmail" by Cornwall boats. Ah well, I needed the practice of making the blocks, etc, myself.
The Xebec is complete now, with a full suite of sails, with the fore brailed up to the mast to show how the system works. I will publish a photo in the near future.

Best regards
Martin
