This sloop was the largest of four sloops of Nelsons flag ship HMS Victory. She was 10 meters in length, was handled by sixteen oars and its primary use was in lowering the large anchors outside of docks and ports. Modern ships use powerful motors for mooring but in those early days the only way to moor a large ship to a dock was with the aid of a sloop.

This is a Panart - Mantua kit and when complete will be some 650mm in length so is not small. With Panart kits the first thing that strikes you on opening the box is the quality of the parts. High quality ply is supplied with no signs of any warping which is always a good sign with any kit.

Limewood and walnut strips are supplied for the multi layered hull. A variety of very detailed brass and wooden fittings are also provided together with sail and rigging line.

Judging by the instructions I wouldn't say this is a kit for beginners as they are pretty limited in detail and without photos to refer too, but full scale plans are provided giving all the detail needed to construct this kit.

All in all this looks like a very nice interesting kit with a method of construction that is different to the norm. The planking is applied without gluing or pinning to the ribs, the ribs are there to give the overall shape only and will be removed when the planking is complete. Gluing the planking in place will be challenging as any excess glue will be very visible both on the inside and outside of the hull, unless of course you decide to paint the completed hull.

Think I will enjoy putting this one together and of course a build diary will be forthcoming very soon....

Regards

Alan

Nice choice of model there Alan! That looks a really good quality kit, nice sharply cut wood and a good selection of fittings too. And I'm very impressed with the quality and clarity of the drawings!
Best of luck with her!

Looks like a nice little kit. As you say, I have found a lot of the wooden ship kits are a little sparse on instructions but shouldn't pose any problem for you.
I agree with Robin, the quality of the materials looks good so should make for an interesting build.

Looks good and the construction looks very like my armed launch build, the 3 layers of planks certainly makes a solid hull.
Watch out for wood wastage though as I didn't seem to have enough of the planking materialBigGrin

Look forward to this build Alan. It's a great choice of build one of which isn't over done which is refreshing to see.
