Looking through various posts i have come across 2 sizes of deck plank someone suggested 3mm wide X 76mm long then later on someone else suggested 5mm wide X 110mm long and i was just wondering what the general consensus is throughout the forum??

Hi mate I use 3mm wide, 1mm thick and 100mm long. That's my own preference

Hi Allan! I used the book Anatomy of the ship The 11-Gun Ship Victory by John McKay as reference the line drawings are a great help, I can't show you the picture from the book as it would be a breach of copyright and don't want to get wrong from DeAGOSTINI. I adjusted the scale of the deck plank and it came to about 3mm wide and 78mm long. That's why I use 3mm x 1mm Tanganyka planks cut to 76mm long to get the correct pattern for the deck, I drew lines at 0mm, 19mm, 38mm, 57mm & 76mm across the deck. The first plank was set at 0mm the second at 19mm the third at 57mm & the forth at 38mm then repeated across the deck to get then pattern right. The small planks were laid onto a sub deck made from 0.8mm x 5mm Tanganyka this way I can get the deck openings in the right places and have a deck which is 1.8mm thick, if I'd planked on top of the 1.5mm planks supplied then the deck would have ended up 2.5mm thick.

Hi again, I forgot mantion that before 3mm planks I made base deck from 0.8mm thick and 80mm wide balsa strip, then on top of it my propper finish. I'm about half way trough but I should have deck ready for next week (hopefully :) ) Tom

BE VERY CARFUL OF THE BOOK ANATOMY OF THE SHIP!! the ship book is based on Victory today. most of the deck planking on Victory today is incorrect to the original size for example all the upper decking came from the royal yacht and is mahogany not oak as it should be. the poop deck planking is nearly half the width if the rest of the upper decking originally this would not have been the case. the only original decking on Victory is the middle gun deck which has wide oak planks.
