Well that concludes this part of my build. Doing the modifications and repair work took far longer than I originally envisaged; a total of 2.5 weeks! I'm so glad with the end results. After all the mistakes, rectifying work followed by more mistakes, rectifying, modifications and finally fitting, I can now look at it without being met by an eyesore. A lot of work to produce an accurate androbust modification but I can now move on to the other parts of the hull very happy. Thanks for looking in, have a great weekend and happy modelling. Good Evening from 'The Dockyard'. I hope you're well? Tonight's post will be focusing on the photo-etched brass tank lids /covers supplied with the part-works. There are 7 in total to be fixed in specific places along the top of the port and starboard saddle tanks. These covers are bolted on allowing easy removal when the U-boat is in dock and the tank internals have to be inspected due to damage or regular maintenance. The first of these 7 tank lids to be affixed is the No.2 Port Ballast Tank, which was often used as a fuel storage tank. Referring to the instructions in the part-works the tank lid is positioned 3mm outwards of the casing [top deck]. The instructions suggest measuring this 3mm spacing with a rule which isn't quite accurate due to the saddle tank curving away. As 6 out of the 7 tank lids have to be fixed with the same 3mm spacing, measuring, especially when the casing curves in and out at various different points would prove to be time consuming too. What I decided to do was to make a spacing tool from plastic strip 3mm wide. This meant that wherever I placed it against the lower sides of the casing, the tank lids, when glued up to my spacer would always be at the correct 3mm distance. The attached photo shows No.2 Port Ballast Tank lid being fixed using my 3mm spacer. The previous photo actually shows No.2 Port Ballast Tank fixed in place and the next tank lid being glued up to my spacer; R1 Port Compensating Tank. The attached photo shows a closer view of the R1 Port Compensating Tank lid. You can clearly see my spacer in this picture. Because of the very nature that the saddle tanks are curved, it became apparent that the flat, etched-brass tank lids would not adhere properly. What I did was to gently bend them around a modellers knife handle to produce a gentle curve more in keeping with the curvature of the saddle tanks so that they would attain improved adhesion when glued. The remainder of the tank lids for the port side were then fixed in place using my spacing tool whilst adding a slight bend to them from a knife handle as described previously. There were 5 tank lids fitted to the port side; No.2 Port Ballast Tank, R1 Port Compensating Tank, R2 Port Compensating Tank, Port Crash Dive Tank and No.4 Port Ballast Tank. Only two tank were fitted to the starboard side as the remainder are not visible due to the cut-outs showing the inside of the U-boat. The two tank lids fixed on this side are; No.2 Starboard Ballast Tank and R1 Starboard Compensating Tank. The attached photo shows No.2 Starboard Ballast Tank lid fitted, with part of it cut and filed off, to follow the contour of the saddle tank. This photo shows R1 Starboard Compensating Tank lid fixed. As i'm going to show the compartment directly beneath it to reveal the Junior Rates Mess and the Galley, I had to remove quite a bit of it so that it again followed the contour of the saddle tank. Well that's it for tonight's post. As a side note it is always worth considering making small jigs, tools or spacers for that matter to maintain accuracy, especially when faced with numerous repetitions of the same parts.
