Hi guys......... guess what? another question or two . I have just started the lower planking of my model now, and i am filled with trepidation.I have laid the first row of planks, tapered the bow plank, no probs. Wneh i test fitted the second row i found that a plank nestled against the last bow plank without any tapering or attention to it other than the usual chamfering. This corresponded on the starboard side. Coming to the third row of planks, it appears that it will only require tapering by about 1.5 mm to frame 13, again the starboard side is similar. I know all our models are individual but is this ok ? I get the impression from the instructions that i should be seeing more of a gap appearing and maybe considering using a dropper by now. I looked at Zaptraders build and would i be right in saying that on that build, the first four rows of lower bow planking didnt require much attention, and that the use of droppers became neccessary thereafter ? Also, am i to expect both sides to meet in line at the false keel of the bow on every row of planks ?Seems logical that they should. What if they dont ? Sorry if it seems a stupid question but all that gained confidence with the upper planking has evaporated when i have started the lower. I feel that getting this right is much more crucial to the smooth lines of the finished article. I will post some pics this weekend , see what you think of it so far. Judgement by my peers, and betters, gives valuable insight as to whether i am on the right path i think.........................cheers Dave

what is happening is,as the planks get lower, they still need to be tapered, they should be starting to rise up at the bow and with a slight twist,if this is not done early, then you WILL get clinkering. If you read on,in zeptraders diary he started to packout the bow,but he is useing different size planks to you.I'm not saying what you are doing is wrong.just be aware that if you do get clinkering you will know why.also stand back and look at the line these planks are taking,if it looks right then carry on.I'm not being critical or saying you are doing it wrong, just be aware. Thanks Johnny, thanks Karl. Just an edit. It was Son of Bulwarks build diary i looked at not Zaps, sorry guys. Yes Karl, I was worried about the clinkering effect, but that has not happened up to now. I have just put the third row of planks on and i tapered by about 1.5mm as that was the gap at frame 12. Just concerned because i dont like the ' suck it and see' approach and i havent even started the stern yet......... seems like this is one of the hardest parts to me, but then so did the upper planking when i strated that. ah well.... onward and downward. cheers guys. i have tried plank 4 now, and find that the gsp is wider than half a plank, so i have followed the guide to doing droppers and having soaked and bent them, i will have to wait till tomorrow to fit them. The temporary plank is rising more now towards the bow, so maybe i as worrying needlessly. My only concern is that the one plank gap comes at former 10 on the port side and former 9 on the starboard. Will this not look a little odd ?

it looks like you are doing ok.by measuring each plank as you go.the only way you can see a difference is head on,I would'nt worry too much.
