Hi all you shipbuilders,
A couple of questions which I have which I am sure you can answer for me.
1. Building up ribs, the preference/recommended method seems to be using card and super glue which included soaking the card with super glue. Is there any reason why wooden planks can't be used particularly when I have to build up rib 16 by approx 1 mm?
2. When planking what is the best order of preparing the planks. Bend, taper and then chamfer?

Hi there Atholm, I used spare planking to build up the ribs mate... Current Builds: Deagostini HMS Victory: Deagostini HMS Sovereign of the seas. Completed Builds: Del Prado: HMAS Bounty: Hachette: RMS Titanic: Del Prado: Cutty Sark...

Hello Atholm,
The method that I use is first to cut the plank to required length, next shaping the plank, that is tapering, after which I then chamfer the edge and finally, work on the bend. There may be other ways but this is the my personal preference through the experience of this build - this being my first attempt at anything like this. Through experience I found that bending the plank first made the other 2 operations that much more difficult and chamferring before tapering negated the effort of the chamferring where the tapering had been done.
Hope this helps and happy building Daffy09

Hi all. I absolutely agree with Daffy. Wet and bent planks are very difficult to work on. If they should need a little tweak then this can be done when fitting after bending, but doing all the shaping at this stage is not advisable. Laury
