I have decided to go down the route to veneer the hull for no other reason than ascetic purposes its just a matter of what type of veneer to use for the upper and lower hull plus the wales
i thought Walnut for the lower hull Sapelly for the upper hull just cant decide on the color for the walesConfused (so open to suggestions)BigGrin BigGrin so if any of the veterans of wood building ships out there would be so kind as to give any suggestions as this is my first wood build i would and no doubt other first timers out there would be grateful of any usable infoDrool Drool

Thanks in advance

hi allan

This is my first build as well so im no expert.

But i have purchased some walnut veneer from ebay for the hull
and some sycamore for the upper part which is light coloured.

I allso got some 5mm*2mm walnut strips from c.m.b for the wales
hopefully this should give a good contrast of woods.

I intend to coat this with a few coats of teak oil.

Am going to try to post some photo's of my build when i get chance
hope this is some help

regards
jeff

Hi Allan! Cool

I made a sample for the hull using offcuts from the planking, the upper part is maple while the lower part is walnut. I used a Admiralty Stain "walnut wood stain" on the wale made from walnut to darken it more, then used a shellac sanding sealer. When I do it for real I won't be sanding the wales, I want the darker look. After sanding and then second coat of sealer is put on then sanded again. I will use Humbrol satin cote varnish as it doesn't yellow like some varnishes can and it will give me a dull finish, I don't want a high gloss look.

I will be using the same stain on walnut for other parts that would be black on the painted ship, this is how I will get a natural wood finish with dark sections.
