SUNDAY 19th March 2017 – The Adler Locomotive Build & Tender A very good afternoon to everyone. I hope that everyone has had a good week whatever you may have been up to. As in previous weeks I thought I would start this week’s update by way of a little “On this Day” entry. On This Day 19th March1649 The House of Commons passed an act abolishing the House of Lords, declaring it 'useless and dangerous to the people of England'."
This week’s build has been interesting and has revealed that despite this being a “revised” kit some of the instructions are still woefully incorrect – more on that later PICTURES 1 & 2I mentioned in my last instalment that some additional colour would be appropriate on the side rails to break up the monotonous Red. I decided the easiest option would be some colouring of the rivet heads. I did start by dry brushing but there is so little to touch that I made more of a mess of the section. So having cleaned up the rails I opted to make life easier and used a “Sharpie” brand permanent marker which has done the job just fine. Some additional silver paint gets added to this section as the build progresses. PICTURES 3 & 4Before we can progress to finally fitting the wheels and side rails we need to add the “valve assemble” underneath the boiler. Picture 4 shows it all in place but unglued so that Top push rod that has taken on a slight angle will be straightened out once the glue gets applied. PICTURES 5 & 6“PROCEED WITH CARE”And this is where the instructions very annoyingly are at fault. It calls for 10 pieces of 2x5x 13mm wood to be cut. I pressed on doing this and glued them into place as per the pictorial instructions. PICTURE 7When dry fitting the Top side rail in place it was shown that this sits too high as indicated by the arrow. The deck of the tender gets planked, and these planks should finish flush with the side rail – not sit below it. So having examined the etch overlays it showed straight away that the wood pieces should be cut to 12mm and NOT 13mm. The other point that came to light is that if you use the 2x5mm wood to make these 10 small parts and then glue on the etch overlays they sit to high on the sides of the tender. PICTURE 8Luckily in my store I had some spare 1.5mm x 5mm strip wood. So with that in hand I glued on, using Timebond by Evostick, the etched parts. PICTURE 9When dry the strip was divided up into its individual number of parts. PICTURE 10I then proceeded to finish gluing on all of these additional pieces of wood strip around the tender sides. “OBSERVATION”In my kit there are just 2 pieces of the 2mmx5mm strip and even without wasting some as I did following the instruction to closely you have not been given sufficient to plank the tender deck as well. Might have been an issue just with my kit but watch out for this as you will need some additional 2mmx5mm strip if you end up in the same position as me. PICTURE 11, 12, 13 & 14On the buffer end of the tender there appears to be insufficient space to fit the 2 etch/wood parts in place as you can see indicated in picture 11. While it’s not at all clear (or called out in the instructions) what you need to do is trim the pre-cut part as indicated in pictures 12 and 13. Once these 2 etch/wood parts are then glued into place all looks well. PICTURES 15 & 16There have been some additional parts glued onto the tender this week and the fit on these pieces is not that good. Areas highlighted by the arrows show places were some additional filler is required as these areas will be visible (although painted) once the tender section is complete. PICTURE 17This shows what things look like once the filler is in place. Once this is dry it will be rubbed down and then a couple of side rails will be added to the top of the tender. And that completes my update for this week. Hope everyone has a good week and I will catch up again with you all very soon. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

Hi Tony, First, my apology for only just commenting on your build of this kit. As a fairly new member to these forums, I am slowly catching up with all the build diaries that take my interest and this one has to be among my list. I just love the way you present your subject with very clear instructions and photos, which make interesting reading. You are a very meticulous worker, keeping your work space very clean and well organised. You are obviously a very talented modeler who has the skills to make complicated and complex models such as this one.. I don't have the skills to model these types of kits, that involves lots of self preparation, cutting and sanding parts, I much prefer to stick with the metal/plastic part work builds like the Honda CB750 that I am presently building and the new Jaguar E-Type build that I have just subscribed to and set up my first ever build diary, which you have already commented on. Likewise as you will know, I have commented on your own Jaguar Build Diary. So you have really got your work cut out Tony with all these builds on the go and I will be following this one from now on with great enthusiasm, as well as all the Jaguar build diaries that are already in place. All I can say is, your work is a credit to you and the way you present your work is second to none. Very well done indeed Tony. BUILDING - HONDA CB750 - HAYNES V8 VISIBLE ENGINE
NEXT BUILD - JAGUAR E-TYPE
