Hi Allen,
I'm in the same predicament myself. I don't really know the best solution here, I'm just taking my time with the hull planking while I give it some serious thought. Initially though, I'm thinking of using 2 maybe 3 contrasting colours and feel it's just a metter of personal choice. Looking at some of the photos of the museum models in the build magazine may give you some ideas.
As for myself, I.ve decided to buy some walnut strip for the 'wales' to contrast with the limewood we're using and finishing the hull with a sealer and varnish. I'm also hoping to copper plate the bottom of the hull providing DeAg can come up with some of the correct scale. (I read somewhere else that they will be offering this option later in the build, I believe it was Tomick although I can't be certain).
Anyway I'm sure that whatever you settle on will make your Victory something you'll be proud of.

Hi Allan, I'm contemplating backing it both ways. Painting one side and staining t'other.  That just leaves bow and stern which will be essentially painted. This way I can have the best of both worlds by just viewing the other side.  As for the staining, I shall use 2 or 3 contrasting colours. Most stains can be mixed so you can blend to your heart's content testing on scrap planking. I'm not sure the coppering will be worth it as the painted side will need a weathered finish which is just as easily achieved with paint. Reproducing the plates and fixing pins is the only problem. Perhaps this could be achieved with strips made from a cheaper material such as aluminium foil with pin heads embossed from the reverse side. I shall be working on this while waiting for the next batch of parts to arrive. I'll post any success in due course under a relevant topic. Laury

Since staining is one of the options for the build I have assumed that there will be advice in the magazine and instructions at a later stage.

Correct, staining info is being provided in the magazine on an ongoing basis, obviously it will not cover personal choice.

In that case you should stain the gratings before they are placed, because there's no magazine info about staining them, which looking at the photo its just the grating frame that should be stained. Tomick attached the following image(s):

Allan you are mistaken about the colour scheme. the picture is dark the pillars and the frame of the grating are dark walnut not black, this offers a nice contrast to the cannon shot which is black. a dark stain would look good if that is your choice. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

Does anyone know of supplier for dark walnut stain or a color close to it for the grating framework and other bits similar in color???

CMB have a dark walnut wood stain http://www.cornwallmodel...g/admiralty_stains.html
Be mindful that it is a thin viscosity stain and will creep beyond where you put it rather than it being a woodstain finish which contains a finish property such as satin, matt or gloss, which does not creep in the same way that a thin viscosity wood stain does - such a product 'Ronseal quickdrying woodstain' from the likes of B&Q
