Hi Guys,

Quick question for you all, that tower thing, what the heck is it for?

I would like to build the T-72 in 1/16 but that Tower thing puts me right off.

What is it for? I have seen loads of pics of the real thing and not one of them has that.

Would it be possible to remove it? I would not be interested in running around and battling other tanks, just running it as a remote control vehicle.

Any advice would be greatfully appreciated.

The "tower thing' is the T-72 night sight which on the model has been made taller to accomodate the IR sensor used for shooting at the supplied IR building or another T-72 tank model, which if you look at the video the IR tower is removable from the turret..

Tamiya R/C tanks also have an IR battle option which is even more unsightly as it comes up through the commanders hatch lol

Yep as Tomick posted. The tower thing is actually a TNP-3-41 night sight (or variant of), and on the T-72 could not be raised or lowered and was quite low in height to the turret, and on some variants had a hatch cover to protect it. The snorkels and wading equipment were fitted to the cupola hatches, air intakes and exhaust, and when not in use, stored on the turret sides and hull, again depending on variant. On the r.c model the night sight has been modified to be the I.R receiver, transmitter, and is probably why it has to be that size to fit all the electrics, although it can be removed as it is there for use with other r.c T-72 models for tank battles.BigGrin

I've also seen this replaced by the actual night sight in Russian builds of the T-72, though I'm not sure if those were alternative parts delivered with the build or scratched by the builder.

Thanks guys,

It would be much better without the Tower thing sticking up.

I just don't like the idea of it looking like Sauron is riding around in the vehicle, but if it can be removed then I may just go for it!
