TUESDAY 21st March 2017 – BUILD THE JAGUAR E TYPE

At this point I am going to put together the parts from Issue 4. It should be noted that these parts are from the TEST issues from last year so once I get the parts against my new subscription I do not know if any of these will be altered. If they are then the new subscription parts will be substituted.

So on with the build:

ISSUE 4 – Parts Included

4-1 Outer Spokes x 48 (Plus Spare)

4-2 Wheel Rim (Outer)

4-3 Spoke Retainer Ring

4-4 Retaining Screws x 4 (plus Spare)

4-5 Wheel Centre

PLUS Wheel building Jig

PLUS Model Making Tweezers

PICTURES 1 & 2

Here we have the build instruction pages from issue 4. Of note this issue is the fact we have a more complex build to work on and this is reflected in with the instructions covering 4 pages for this edition.

PICTURE 3

This picture shows each of the component parts we receive with Issue 4 (again this is from the TEST so there may be some changes with the full subscription Issue 4 Parts). In my test pack I had just the required 48 spokes for this stage and no spare. Not an issue to be honest.

PICTURE 4

Here we can see the jig upon which the wheel will be constructed. This issue we are also provided with a pair of tweezers to allow us to work on the spoke section.

I personally found the tweezers supplied rather springy and needing a fair amount of pressure to keep closed. As I have a bit of an issue with my fingers I opted to use a pair from my own tool kit.

PICTURE 5

We need to place the Wheel Hub onto the jig and to ensure the lines up correctly the jig and the hub itself are both keyed with a peg on the jig and a slot on the hub. Make sure that these align when matching the 2 halves together.

PICTURE 6

Similar with the wheel rim we have this time a hole in the rim and a peg on the jig to ensure both parts align correctly.

PICTURE 7

And once both parts are aligned on the jig this is what it looks like. At this stage you are now ready to start inserting the individual spokes. well.

PICTURE 8

I noticed in my trial parts that some of the spoke ends are slightly more bent over than others.

This had not detrimental effect on my assemble other than finding were the end is not at 90 degrees it does make inserting the spoke through the hub a little more difficult as you have to insert the spoke and then angle it to get it fully through the hole. If you have an issue here nothing stopping you from adjusting the angle on the end of the spoke with a small pair of pliers.

PICTURE 9

“PROCEED WITH CARE”

Picture 6 on page 13 of the build instructions appears to show the spoke end pointing towards the right.

WHILE IT DOES NOT STATE TO INSERT IT INTO THE RIM IN THIS ORIENTATION IN THE BUILD INSTRUCTIONS JUST ENSURE YOU DOUBLE CHECK HOW THIS PART DOES FIT THE RIM FROM THE NEXT SET OF PICTURES IN THE INSTRUCTIONS.

PICTURE 10

If you look at the ends of these spokes for each pair inserted into the hub you want to ensure you always have 2 of the bent ends facing.

PICTURE 11

As you start inserting the spokes into the lower set of hold on the Wheel Hub bear in mind that its “SPOKE”, “MISS ONE” “SPOKE”, “MISS ON” all the way around the slots in the Wheel Rim.

“OBSERVATION”

The instructions call for a narrow piece of double sided tape to be pressed into place before you start adding the spokes. The idea being it stops the inserted spokes falling out of alignment as you proceed around the Hub.

I opted NOT to use that method on my build and found no problems with any of the spokes coming adrift as other were inserted.

That is my choice and its down to you as the builder to decide if you follow the instructions to the letter or not. The instructions are well thought out so its probable best you do not deviate from these unless you are really sure of what you are doing.

My reasons for not using the tape:

1. None supplied with the test pieces – not sure if it will be on the proper subscription parts

2. Only double sided I have available is carpet tape which I considered too thick and messy.

3. If you do not get the tape correctly into place when it comes to joining the 2 wheel halves together, you could end up with it visible on the finished wheel.

PICTURE 12

This is the wheel after inserting the first row of spokes. So onto the second layer.

PICTURE 13

And having inserted the remaining 2nd layer spokes this is the effect.

PICTURE 14

We now have to prevent all of the spokes coming free and for this we are provided with a Spoke Retainer Ring.

This part is again keyed with a TAB on the Retainer Rim and a Slot on the Wheel Rim.

PICTURE 15

Carefully check that all of the bent ends on the spokes are correctly in place and then lower the Retainer Ring into place.

It gets secured using 4 of the 5 supplied screws from this edition. Again remember that you are screwing into plastic so do so with a light touch to prevent damage to the plastic part.

PICTURES 16 & 17

And having removed the assemble from the build jig this is what the first half of the wheel looks like. And I must say it looks very smart indeed.

PICTURE 18

Ensure that you pack away the wheel assemble you have been working on along with the tweezers and build jig in a safe and secure place until its required again.

“OBSERVATION” PICTURES A & B

Just for interest it’s worth noting that the large flange around the wheel rim as indicated in PICTURE A will actually disappear from view once fitted into its matching tyre as shown in PICTURE B.

HOT TIP OF THE WEEK

These tips will drastically reduce over the weeks as we progress but for now here are a couple of things to consider.

While we can all look forward to Summer fast approaching with the hope of brighter days many of us do our building at the ends of the day when the ambient light may not be at its best.

My recommendation for this issue is do your best to ensure your work area is well lit – eyestrain and headaches can be caused without adequate lighting and that takes some of the fun out of this wonderful hobby

Really nice diary Tony.

As I expected from my own issue 1, the quality of the parts is superb. The detail on that tyre is exceptional. Are you planning to 'scrub' the tyre to make it look worn at all, or are you planning on a showroom piece?

Your posts are very well thought out, and I am sure will be an invaluable aid to my own build.

Definately a ThumpUp from me.

Excellent Diary so far Tony. You deserve a special medal just for your presentation, which is both precise and well represented. I think you will lead the field and give us all encouragement with this build. Well done Cool

That is very kind comments so many thanks for that.

For me this is going to be a "showroom" finish so will be leaving the tyres untouched.

Geoff

Many thanks for that.

I am now waiting on my subscription parts to start arriving as it appears my application had not been correctly processed first time around.

Issue 1 should be ok as that is from the parts the shops have had in stock.

My 3-4 are from the test parts from last year so depending on what comes through there may be a need to change out some of the bits.

Its going to be a very nice model though and the detail already on the very tiny parts is fantastic.

Hope you get as much pleasure from your build as I have with the parts i have been playing with so far.BigGrin

Hi,

This is an excellent diary Tony, well thought out and presented, I have already found it very useful just this morning whilst doing the first two issues so thank you for taking the time to do it.

Glad you found it interesting.

My issues 2, 3 and 4 are from the test series so may require some amending when the proper subscription parts start to arrive.

Had the parts sat there doing nothing and couple of weeks leave so decided tonhave a dabble with the bits.

Making the wire wheels will add so much fine detail to the finished model and the assemble is so well thought out.

Hope you have great fun with your build and looking at the posts this is going to be a very popular build.

Tony,

As mentioned this is an excellent diary, really well presented. I will certainly reference it when I eventually start my build.

SATURDAY 01st April 2017 – BUILD THE JAGUAR E TYPE

I received this morning issues 1 and 2 against my corrected subscription. I am supposed to have the first 5 editions free using the trial users code that was used but for some reason have received a £1.99 invoice. I have sent off my cheque in today’s post but will have to query this when customer services open on Monday.

As I had already purchased a revised issue 1 from Asda a week or so back the newly delivered issue 1 will be left un-opened for now as there is nothing it that which requires my attention.

So for this instalment it’s a case of making corrections to my earlier updates using the revised parts from issue 2.

So on with the build:

PICTURE 1

The first part that has seen a change is the Oil filler cap which sees the locating tab being in a different position meaning that when installed the JAGUAR logo runs across the cam cover.
There is some fairly decent depth to the Jaguar lettering on the oil filler cap so I thought it would be good to bring out this detail with a little paint.

“PROCEED WITH CARE”

If you should decide to follow me with this slight enhancement, please ensure that you use nothing more than a water based paint to infill the lettering. Anything that involves solvents is highly likely to destroy the chromed finish on this part so proceed with care.

PICTURE 2

Having given the water based black paint a few moments to settle I used a cotton bud to remove the excess paint leaving it just in the recesses of the JAGUAR name.

PICTURES 3 & 4

And this is what the oil filler cap looks like once screwed into place on the cam cover

PICTURES 5, 6, 7 & 8

I was somewhat disappointed with these revised can shafts. They have been changed in that the cams themselves are not all aligned in the same direction as was the case on the test parts.

However, in my example there is a significant amount of flash on the parts (easily cleaned off with a small file), but slightly more disappointing is the fact that one of them is a very loose fit in the engine mounting and the other has one end that will not fit flush into the hole in the engine part.

PICTURES 9, 10 & 11

The issue with the cams not sitting correctly has a knock on effect in that when the Cam Covers are pressed into place the do not sit correctly and a gap is left between the cam cover and the engine mount.

At this stage the correction would be the use of spot of CA glue but as I do not know how these parts will interact with future instalments I do not want to start gluing things at this stage only to cause myself issues later on.

PICTURES 12 & 13

This what the result of this part of the build looks like. I rather like the way the painting of the oil filler cap has brought out the detail on that part.

PICTURE 14

Also included with this particular issue is the first seat cushion. In this picture you can see the original test part on the left and the revised part on the right. Apart from a difference in the grain of the material being used (the revised part being much finer) and a very slight colour difference there is not much to say about this piece.
It’s just a case of storing it away for now until its required later in the build.

PICTURES 15, 16 & 17

Subscribers receive the first of the Free Gifts with Issues 1 & 2. This takes the form of a facsimile of the E Type Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbook.

Picture 15 shows the edition received today with the one from the test run on the right side of the picture.

The main differences between the 2 are the paper used to print up the book with the new edition being on a shiner paper. The other point with this revised copy is that Deagostini have stamped each page with their name. This may be to stop copies of this book being posted on EBay as “Originals” as seemed to be the case with the trial versions and people asking “silly” amounts of money for them.

Anyhow a very nice addition as a subscriber and I can already see it forming part of a display once the car is complete with maybe the book being added to the display case open at a suitable page – I am sure you get the idea.

Well that covers my corrections to my earlier Issue 2 instalment. Let’s hope that this month passes at the speed of light so that the next set of parts are not long in arriving 

SATURDAY 01st April 2017 – BUILD THE JAGUAR E TYPE

“TIP”

As we progress with the build chances are that we will build up quite a collection of spare screws that are provided with each instalment.
Chances are that once you have screwed a part together you may never need that spare that has been provided. However, if you are like me you will never throw away parts like this because you “never know when they might prove handy”.

So what I have purchased is one of those “7 days 4 a day” pill storage boxes.

This one does not have the usual “mon, tues, wed etc.” lettering so suited me better.

With this one end up with 28 individual little compartments in blocks of 4 each with its own little cover.

What would have been nice would have been some dimensions adding to the screws being used because chances are over the coming weeks many of the screws we will use in this build will be the same size.

It seems the screw pack naming convention in each issue i.e. JP-02 probable means “JAGUAR PACK – 02” so that is how I have started to label my storage box but may change that later as the build progresses and we end up with more spare screws.

Pictures 1 – 4 shows the box I have purchased (my earlier version saw a refund being given as it arrived damaged in the post but luckily I was able to track down an identical version to replace it.

Many thanks.

Its minor issues to be honest that i am sure can be sorted.

While they have changed the cam shafts in the new release if they are never to be seen under the covers i may just revert to using the old ones as the fit was a lot better.

Its a case of waiting to see how it all shapes up over the coming months without rushing in and making changes that could cause problems later. BigGrin

BigGrin Hi Tony

Looking good with the box for the screw storage.

Just one point I cant say that I have ever bought a kit that has needed some sort of rectification of parts such as your Adler build which has major filling/gap problems.

The cam lobes differ from the test because they are closer to accuracy than those of the test. Also the, the seat cover of the test was faux leather, the launch version is real leather.
