Stage 4. Now that the basic hull framework has been completed it was now time to concentrate efforts on shaping the ribs ready for the planking stage. It is not my intention to go through the shaping process, just make sure you follow the guidelines in the instructions taking time and care to get it right. The effort spent here to ensure you have smooth flowing lines along the hull will go a long way to ensuring your planking goes well. . Have shown here the tools I used to complete this stage... Stage 5. First thing to point out with the hull planking is that this build has a single layer of planking only and the shape of the hull gives rise to some very nice curves. This means not only do the edges of the planks need to be shaped to give a good strong bond but also applying smooth bends at the bow is a must. Have shown a couple of pics of the electric plank bender I used, a must have item in any ship builders toolbox. This item is available in the online shop. The planking during this build will follow the instructions as laid out. It should be noted that the planking method is acceptable for those that intend to paint their hull however, I do not think it to be the best way to plank for those wishing to go down the route of having a natural or stained finish therefore, builders should revert to their own method of planking. To start the planking I first marked out the distances from the top of the ribs to the top edge of the first planking row following the measurements shown in the instructions. Glued and pinned the first row in place and left overnight to dry. Took the four pieces making up the first deck and fitted in place, these are not glued in place at this stage but held in place with masking tape. Doing this helps to ensure you get the shape of the bow just right. Now moved on to fitting the next 4 full rows of planking ensuring the planks at the stern run behind the side galleries, the joints at the ends of the planks being staggered. Applied a sixth row but this time the planks stops at the first rib at the bow. Two further rows were applied to the stern area from rib 9 to bring the planking level up to the tops of the ribs. Final row applied to the bow up to rib 7 again to bring the planking level up to the tops of the ribs. A 4mm gap is left between the planks at the bow. This completes stage 5. Stage 6 This stage started with the trimming of the stern planks in line with the stern taking care not to damage the tabs for the rear gallery section.. Then removed the four pieces making up the first deck and set them aside for now. Now moved onto trimming the tops of the bulwarks to the height of the ribs with the centre section being level with the deck, this area may require further trimming when we come to actually fit the deck.... That completed stage 6. Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
