Due to the delicate photo etch gallery at the stern, I was not conferable masking the upper hull to paint the lower hull, thus I have painted the lower hull by hand.

Two coats were required to get a nice even finish. the boot line was added using fine line tape. Happy with the result so far. I will come back to the hull later in the build Smile

With the hull complete I have turned my attention to the upper works.

The forward lower superstructure is first, just some etch doors and railings to add, a bit fiddly but no issues. I found my wax etch positioning pencil essential for these small parts.

Next is the rear superstructure is next this mounts the main loading crane and main mast. The crane took nearly an hour to form and glue together but the finished look is considerably improved on the kit part.

Building the main mast starfish was up next, I am sure I went crosseyed making this even with my magnifying glasses but again the effort is worth it.

The mast assembly was relatively straight forward but a lot of care was needed as the starfish adds weight that the mast mounting point was not designed for.

the finished sub assembly have been put aside for priming at a later date

Very nice job with all that tiny etch, the main mast looks awesome Drool

I have one of those wax pencils myself, they're fantastic for tiny etch parts Cool

next up is the funnel. forward walkway is added as well as the funnel cap. a lot quicker to type than to make Blink

with the funnel in the bag I moved to the forward superstructure. base section first with etch doors replacing the moulded on lumps. railings add to the look, they wee a bit fiddly.

The forward superstructure is built up using the kit etch, it all goes together easily.

Main Guns are up next They all have a slightly different arrangement with additional gun platforms and one with an aircraft catapult. The kit comes with etch for all of these but the WEM sets add better detail and a better scale and shape.

All the etch on the guns was held in place with PVA.

All the built up sub assemblies have now been primed with Halfords grey. The ships boats have also been primed 'hull up' prior to having the tops built up and primed.

I will be pausing the sub assembly build now to move back to the hull. Before the first level of superstructure can be added the ships hull will need to be weathered. Some weathering videos coming up next BigGrin

Continuing the weathering of the hull Below the waterline.

The Hull below the waterline is often ignored by model builders when weathering a ship, but this part of the ship gets less regular maintenance then any other

I started my process by adding chipping and scratching to the lower hull. Using a lighter shade of red to the anti-fowling red to give subtle effects.

With the chipping done I have moved on to salt streaks next followed by adding algae.

Using AK enamels and white spirit we start by adding white streaks from the waterline down the hull.

Using a stiff brush dampened with white spirit and dried the streaking is thinned and blended using downward strokes to maintain the streaking effect. Any excessive streaking or pooling of thinned wash can be removed using a cotton bud dampened with white spirit.

The end effect should dull the hull overall but maintain some streaking effect.

Next is the addition of the Algae. I have used AK slimy green dark for this. I am mainly interested in showing this along the waterline, however occasional splurges on the rest of the hull help break up the eveness of the salt streaking, The paint is applied liberally.

Using a piece of tissue repeatedly dapple the paint to get an uneven finish.

Any green paint that strays over the waterline can be cleaned up using a fine brush with white spirit.

I can now paint the screws brass. I have used AK True Metal Brass thinned with a little white spirit.

I will continue the weathering in the next post.

Just one thing, the prop blades would look a weathered dull brass almost bronze look to them and verdigris
