Thanks for the comments guys.

I have now finished planking the hull and given it an initial sanding. Pic 1 shows the hull nearing completion, Pic 2 shows the finished planking all be it looking a little rough and Pic 3 shows the hull after the initial sanding.

Some filler will be required but the final fill and sanding process will take place after the transom has been planked and the keel fitted.

Thanks for looking in guys.

I have now planked the deck.

The edges of each plank were first blackened with a 9B pencil to simulate caulking.

Pic 1 shows the first plank laid along the centre line. A second plank was laid alongside the first and the mast holes were then carved out of the first plank laid, Pic 2.

Planking continued until the whole deck was covered, all overhanging planking was removed and the deck given a light sanding. The plank ends were then drawn in and the treenails marked on, Pics 3 & 4.

The deck was then given a coat of clear mat varnish to seal it.

That's it for now.

Thanks for looking in guys and for the comments.

The next job is to attach the bulwarks. These are provided in 3 pieces, one for port, one for starboard and a stern piece. The side pieces are in light ply and are pre-shaped and fairly flexible whilst the stern piece is of more rigid ply. The port and starboard pieces still needed some sanding to fit correctly on the first row of planks especially at the bow. As the bulwarks follow the slope of the hull it made almost impossible to clamp them in place whilst gluing so I pre-shaped the bow ends using an electric plank bender, Pic 1. Once shaped I glued them to the hull using the same method as used on the planking, this negated the need for clamping. The stern piece was then glued in place, Pic 2.

The open area under the curved stern was then planked, Pic 3 & 4.

The next job was to attach the keel. This came in four pieces – a stem section for the bow, two straight sections for the bottom and a stern piece, Pic 5. These all went on with no problems, the stern pieces just needed cut to fit. The transom was then planked either side of the stern keel piece, Pic 6.

Next the rubbing strakes were soaked, the forward ends pre-bent and then clamped to the outside of the bulwarks and allowed to fully dry in situ, Pic 7.

While the rubbing strakes were drying I decided to start the first of the two cabin structures. First the roof piece was removed from the fret and the edges sanded. It then needed to be bent to follow the camber of the deck and so was soaked and then clamped over a piece of plank and allowed to dry, Pic 8.

Whilst the roof was drying I removed the cabin sides from the fret and glued them together ensuring the parts were square, Pics 9, 10 & 11. The lower edges of the side pieces are shaped to fit the forward-aft curve of the deck and the end pieces shaped to match the camber.

The inside face of the roof was stained walnut and the sides sprayed with Tamiya brown, Pic 12.

The roof was then glued to the sides and then veneered with the supplied strips, Pics 13, 14 & 15.

The next job on the hull is to glue the rubbing strakes on and fix the bow re-enforcement pieces then sand, fill and paint the hull.
