This photo shows the U-boat the correct way up, panelling fixed in place. I'm very happy with the way it turned out as it carries on the theme from the brass panelling supplied with the part-works; the Engine Room to the left of the photo and the Control Room to the right of the photo. Good Evening Fellow Modellers from 'The Dockyard'. This weeks build log of my U230 U-boat will be looking at fitting out No.2 Battery Compartment and also fitting the part-works supplied, etched brass ballast tank covers. The attached photo shows the cut-out which will represent a glimpse of No.2 Battery Compartment. The actual battery compartment runs the full length beneath the Junior Rates Mess & Galley. The batteries fitted to the U-boats were of similar design to the ones fitted to my first submarine draft; HMS/M Opportune, an 'O'-class diesel-electric powered boat. Both the U-boats and the 'O' class boats had two battery compartments; one forward and one aft. It's not to say that there was a massive battery but rather banks of battery cells. The dimensions of these cells on 'O' class boats and U-boats were near enough the same. That is each cell stood about 3 feet tall and 15 inches square and weighed 500Kg [1/2 tonne]! The main difference was that 'O' class boats had more cells; 128 per battery compartment, whereas the U-boats had 64 cells per battery. The first job was to add a backing sheet of 0.25mm thick plastic sheet to the planking; to aid strength and provide a suitable surface for which to add details.
