Thanks for looking in guys and for the comments.

I decided to first carry on with the cabin build. The instructions show veneering the roof edges with full width strips of veneer but I decided to cut the strips in half length ways to make the process more manageable. I made a very simple jig by gluing a piece of scrap plank to a piece of mdf then marking a line half the width of a strip alongside it, Pic 1. It was then a simple matter to butt the strip up to the plank, place a steel rule along the line and then gently make several light passes along the strip with a scalpel, Pics 2 & 3.

These half width strips were then cut to length and glued to the roof edges. The only problematic areas were the corners as these are rounded and the strips would split even after soaking, so I cut short lengths of veneer from a full width strip, turned it through 90 degrees, so it would bend with the grain, and glued these to the corners, Pics 4 & 5.

Pic 6 shows the completed roof after trimming, sanding and a coat of matt varnish.

The next task was to make the sliding hatch to go over the cabin companion way. First I made the rails on which the hatch slides. These were made from two angled pre-cut ply pieces onto which the instructions said to glue lengths of 1.5x3mm strip. However, the angled pieces are cut from 3mm ply so there would be no overhang for the rails so I used 1.5x5mm planking for the rails. These were then painted brown, Pics 7 & 8.

Two similar rails were made from lengths of 1.5x3mm strip and glued to the underside of the hatch, Pic 9. The underside of the hatch was stained walnut and the upper side and edges veneered in the same way as the roof. A handle was made from brass wire and fixed to the hatch, Pic 10.

Two doors were then made by gluing bits of half width veneer onto the ply parts, the backs of which were first stained walnut, Pics 11 & 12.

Hinges were made from bent brass wire for the pins and etch brass hinges bent around them, Pic 13, and these were then fitted to the doors, Pic 14.

The previously made rails were glued to the cabin roof and the doors clamped in position so the hinges could be attached to the cabin, pic 15.

The cowls for both cabins are cast metal parts and these were first filed to remove ant casting seams then cleaned with a brass wire brush on a rotary tool, Pic 16. Both cowls were then sprayed black, Pic 17.

The hatch was slid into place then a piece of masking tape was applied to the cabin roof and the position of the cowl marked on to it, Pic 18. A 2mm hole was then drilled, the masking tape removed and the cowl glued in place.

Pic 19 shows the completed cabin.

The varnish will make a difference but not decided exactly what varnish to use - I did think think of giving it a few coats of Klear but not sure if this will yellow over time.

Any thoughts would be welcome.
