This photo shows the one end of the shorter pipe drilled out and an aluminium pin glued to the end. This pin will locate in a pre-drilled hole on the blanking plate. I had already marked out the pipe locations and drilled the holes when marking out the holes for the M1 bolts. The pins help strengthen the pipework when fitted, aid location and ensure they align. Phil Fantastic as ever. Was watching something on freeview last night about the latest us sub and i can relate to your periscope detailing better now. In these new subs they have done away with the traditional periscope using video cameras on something they termed "the sail". Apparently doing away with the traditional periscope gives them loads of room back. Something i have never thought abought when you watch the old ww2 type films. Looking forward to your next installment. Happy Modelling

A superb update Phil, this is such a enjoyable build to follow. Your scratch building is fantastic and really adding to the detail, I also love how you are showing each stage of the scratch building to show us how you got to the end result. Eagerly awaiting more

Looking forward to your next installment. Thank you very much Tony. Much appreciated. I just did a bit of research on the new photonic masts which have replaced periscopes. A quote from Wiki below; "21st-century submarines do not necessarily have periscopes. The United States Navy's Virginia-class submarines and the Royal Navy's Astute class submarines instead use photonics masts, pioneered by the Royal Navy's HMS Trenchant, which lift an electronic imaging sensor-set above the water. Signals from the sensor-set travel electronically to workstations in the submarine's control centre. While the cables carrying the signal must penetrate the submarine's hull, they use a much smaller and more easily sealed—and therefore less expensive and safer—hull opening than those required by periscopes. Eliminating the telescoping tube running through the conning tower also allows greater freedom in designing the pressure hull and in placing internal equipment." On my first submarine, HMS/M Opportune, a diesel/electric boat which for all intents and purposes was the same as a U-Boat in design and layout, the Radio Signalman was allowed to carry a small amount of brandy. Why? It was his job to clean the periscope lenses when in harbour! Mind you, my first job was to clean the outside of the windows [port-holes] when dived. Joke! The boats don't have port-holes but the amount of times I used to get asked that and who cleaned them! Regards, Phil W. I was thinking maybe I was uploading too many photos and being overly detailed, but if you and other members enjoy looking at the different stages in scratch building then i'm happy with that!
