Your scratch building is fantastic and really adding to the detail, I also love how you are showing each stage of the scratch building to show us how you got to the end result. Eagerly awaiting more Thanks Dave. I really appreciate your comments and glad you're enjoying the build. I was thinking maybe I was uploading too many photos and being overly detailed, but if you and other members enjoy looking at the different stages in scratch building then i'm happy with that! Regards, Phil W. Definitely not too many photos Phil, please carry on as you are

Good Evening from 'The Dockyard'. In this weeks update of my U230 U-boat build log I will be looking at the part-works supplied components that make up the Control Room; forward, aft and port side bulkheads, deck [floor] and deck head [ceiling]. The attached photo shows the parts laid out next to the boat. Sticky Wickett attached the following image(s): Completed projects: 1/43 scale Bedford HA van / 1/43 scale MG TD sports car Current projects: 1/48 scale U-boat [U230] Future projects: 1/148 scale railway diorama / 1/50 scale R/C Volvo F89 logging truck / 1/148 scale Thunderbirds Fireflash

In an earlier part-works issue the instructions tell you to remove part of the hull above the Control Room. The reason is to make it easier to fit the parts mentioned before. I didn't really want to do that as I had spent a lot of time fitting the planking that would then have to be cut away only to be refitted later. Because of this decision I had to cut out grooves in the forward and aft bulkheads so that they would fit around the MDF supports. The attached photo shows the forward bulkhead with the groove cut out. All the parts at this stage are dry fitted to check for alignment. Later on in the build I will paint and fit them out with the part-works supplied details such as; valve hand wheels and bulkhead handles. This photo shows the forward bulkhead in place. From the previous photos of the forward and aft bulkheads you can see the etched brass saddle tank profiles. These parts had to be extensively filed to match the curve of the saddle tank and for them to align with the bulkheads. As a side note i have been checking the German part-works issues to establish what to expect and the fitting of these brass profiles doesn't happen until issue 148; the part-works instructions show the fitting of these appears to be very straight forward but that wasn't the case. I collect issue 140 this week, so i'm glad I took the time to fit them now rather than have to file and sand them later when the U-boat is painted and weathered. I also had to grind away most of the locating side of the plastic port side bulkhead and deck head to get them to align as the moulded ribs that act as locators were preventing the parts from fitting correctly. The attached photo shows the port side bulkhead with the locating profiles filed out. The deck and tread plate in place. Only a small amount of filing was required for it to slide underneath the forward and aft bulkheads. This photo shows the underside of the deck head [ceiling]. This part proved to be the most problematic to fit to such an extent that I had to remove all of the moulded locators with the dremel. Another photo showing the extent I had to go to make this part fit by removing everything on the underside that was preventing the deck head from fitting correctly. Another photo of the underside. Plastic shreds covered the floor by the time I had finished!
