Once again thanks for all the interest, looking forward to getting started. Have been looking into the iron planking and thinking of also trying Bristol board as a possible plating medium.

Think I will try some different methods and and share the findings see what people think.

And we are off...Cool

In 2014 I spent a full day on HMS Warrior at the Historic ship dockyard in Portsmouth and took over 400 pictures for reference as well as having quite a long conversation with one of the historians. I have also been in contact with the HMS Warrior preservation Trust seeking help with deck and iron plate plans.

My intention is to make as accurate a model as possible of the version of the ship now displayed at Portsmouth, she did undergo some refit changes in her short working life. Thus I may be making some small modifications to the kit as we go to add detail.

Having gone through the instructions and kit parts in great detail ( I have actually re-written the instructions in a spreadsheet following the build sequence I want to follow to allow for modifications) I have found the kit to be very accurate straight from the box.

All photos that are shown in this build diary are from my own collection

As has already been said above this is a huge project and in more ways than one. The kit itself references over 900 parts. There are 11 sheets of laser cut ply parts and one sheet of etch brass along with many turned bras parts brass rod (the has not been coiled - big thanks Billing) Then there is the overall size, a fraction under 1.5 meters long and over 0.5 meters high. Most parts need painting.

Now a quick word about the real thing. Since her restoration in the 1980s she has undergone constant restoration work, I believe the upper deck has been replaced twice since the restoration and they now use cheaper woods and don't follow the deck planking pattern of the original. currently she needs £4.5 millions to secure her future, they are £1 million away from this target. you can help support HMS Warrior here

http://www.hmswarrior.org

Some picks of the real thing to wet the appetite. Note the eye catching figurehead of a greek warrior. The stern gallery is interesting as it is purely for show the space is taken up by the steering mechanism and the propeller when raised. the Admirals cabin is forward of the gallery with no stern facing windows. the Propella was hoisted up when just under sail to reduce drag, this needed a lifting rig on the main deck, not a quick procedure. currently the propeller is in the up position you can see the tip of the blade just touching the water. when filly loaded the propeller was fully submerged but only just below the water line.

The Build

Construction starts with the frames. The timber is all good quality and the fit is nice and tight. the small lower deck pieces and stern and gallery pieces are simply dry fitted initially to ensure everything fits and is square and true. The kit comes with some small blocks for use as a build jig. I did not have a jig long enough so have used a build board for assembling models to plans, the supplied jig blocks pinned in nicely.

I am not sure how much of the lower deck will be seen through the gratings and companion ways but I decided I did not want to leave the decks blank wood. I have chosen to draw on planking that is 3mm wide. any possibly visible walls have been painted white.

All the frame joints have had a bead of glue to reinforce them

Bow and stern formers have also been added

At the moment Warrior is a filler job so I may not be posting to often initially until Barham is finished, should be soonBigGrin

Thanks for looking in

Great to see this underway Cool

The end result being 1.5m long and half this in height, It could be a very frustrating struggle construct in such a confined space in terms of moveing it aroind to work on both sides, could also be a struggle to bring the completed build out of the loft workspace area.

Good luck with her and watching with interest Cool
