Hi guys time for my next update. As mentioned, i wasn't happy with my previous attempt at planking, so bought my new toy (above), and this is my result! Used 4mm Tanganyka rather than the lime wood (nicked the idea from Steve-O thanks mate BigGrin ) Found a new use for my wallpaper seam-edger too!
Much happier with this one. Just needs sanding down and either matt varnishing or use Danish oil (never used this though)
Maybe a desision for another day BigGrin

Cool Thanks for the kind words guys. Here is my latest update. As you can see i have moved her to the bigger jig. Really like the way it holds and squares everything up nicely. I have decided to build each deck up as far as possible as i go. That way i am hoping the planking lays better and the finished stain/varnish will be more even. More to follow....

Thanks for looking and your kind comments Dave.
The latest update with the build:
I decided to biuld the hull up with all the bulkheads in place so i can do a straight run on the deck planking. Didn't like the idea of stopping and starting as was descibed in the instructions. Had a little bit of an issue with the middle section not sitting right after gluing, so using a tip i had been given earlier, i applied hot water on a paintbrush to loosen the glue and re-seated the deck.

I will try to upload some more photo's later in the week (time permitting). It is also getting close to decision time regarding the staining or varnishing of the tanganyka planking.

More to follow.....

Hi guys,
Well it's been a while since i updated this build. Upon reflection, i didn't like how i'd planked the decks with the Tanganyka, doing it in small strips. So bought extra planking strips, and assembled them up to current point. Much happier with the result now BigGrin . I will upload photos later.

Regards
Gray

Hi Capt'n,

You're doing really well and it's a really fine build, and the Trinidad is a lovely ship. I'm sure you will get lots of pleasure from building her.

I've really enjoyed reading your diary and will be following your build with interest. I know what you mean about the Hobbyzone Jig, I got one of these not long ago, and you could make a build diary out of building this alone LOL

I like the way you have overcome problems that you've encountered. With reference to the planking are you going for pencil or tree nails to simulate the plank fixing. Looking forward to seeing more of this one. BigGrin

Hi Silent_Running,
Thanks for your comments, and looking in, always appreciated. No, i will be sticking to the pencil method, if only for speed and ease.

With regards to the Hobbyzone jig, you are too right regarding it's own build diary Laugh The only real problem using it is that it's soooo darn heavy to move around BigGrin

Some photos to show current progress. Have removed bowsprit deck for now to allow better access. Unhappy with the planking of the deck, i have started to redo it in full strips. Sort of like 'double planking' BigGrin . Much happier now.
That's the beauty of these builds, we can make them look as we want ThumpUp

Do you think all the clamps are overkill? Flapper LOL BigGrin

cheers Gray

BigGrin Thanks for looking in, guys ThumpUp

Here is another little update. I have completed the planking on the middle deck, and given it a light sanding. Next, i shall start looking at oils and varnishes. hopefully, that will really bring out the colour of the wood strips BigGrin

cheers
