Interestingly, one of the HMS Victory guides some years ago told me that it was now believed that the internal bulwark colours on the gun decks was yellow ochre not white. and the stern gallery cabins light blue This was before the discovery of the so called original external colours, so this view may have changed again!! I think it would have been very dark inside had that been the case. http://www.dailymail.co....one-hideous-orange.html

[quote] Whitewash seems to make sense for another reason, that back in the day coloured paint was very expensive and whitewash was cheap. Though the orlop deck (where Nelson died) is now thought to have been a pale creamy stone colour.
