Good Evening from 'The Dockyard'. This weeks update of my U230 u-boat log will be focusing on the Forward Torpedo Compartment. I had already carried out some work on this compartment back in 2015 after purchasing the AMP's from a German supplier. The resin parts were pricey and not particularly accurate dimensionally, so i used some as templates with which to scratch build the different parts. One of these parts was the deck, including the lockers where the lower three bunks are located. I completed this in November 2015. Using the original i could measure it then build my own version based 'around' those measurements. The aft bulkhead will also get re-built later on in this build log, as will the torpedo tube bulkhead. The other original components may get left 'as is'; i will see how they fit and look. Another of the original parts i'm replacing is the deckhead [ceiling]. When offering the original up for a test fit, i found it didn't align properly and that it's contour didn't match the pressure hull shape, being too flat. I guess it was made that way to give the impression of the curved pressure hull, just a flattened top to accommodate the MDF supports. I decided that if i was to rebuild the deckhead then i could make it curved all the way round to match the rest of the pressure hull.  The first job was to sand out the mdf to reduce it enough so that i could fit a semi-circular curve representing the hull to judge how much material to remove. The attached photos show the deckhead being sanded back, with the majority being removed around the centre line to accommodate the curve of the hull. I decided to make 5 semi-circular templates with the largest diameter [No.1] at the aft end of the deck head and the smallest diameter [No.5] near the torpedo tube bulkhead to mimic the conical shape. As a side note, the pressure hull, generally on submarines is cigar shaped; a cylinder with domed ends. The Type VIIC U-boat's sported this style but with tapered ends capped with domes. The attached photo shows No.3 semi-circular template being checked against the hull. The next step was to use the templates as formers with which to fix a sheet 0f 0.25mm plastic sheet around, knowing that i had the correct curve. I marked out and cut the sheet so that it would cover an area larger than intended, marked a centre line and began to glue the semi-circular templates to it, curving the sheet around them as i worked my way to the smallest diameter. The attached photo shows No's 5 and 4 fitted. The technique i found was to only glue a small section of the template at a time.
