The USS Constitution (or "Old Ironsides" as she is more commonly known) is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy, named by President George Washington after the Constitution of the United States of America. Old Ironsides is a living monument and is the world's oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat.

Launched in 1797, Constitution was one of six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 and the third constructed. Joshua Humphreys designed the frigates to be the young Navy's capital ships, and so Constitution and her sisters were larger and more heavily armed and built than standard frigates of the period. The Constitution was built in Boston, Massachusetts at Edmund Hartt's shipyard. Her first duties with the newly formed U.S. Navy were to provide protection for American merchant shipping during the Quasi-War with France and to defeat the Barbary pirates in the First Barbary War.
Constitution is most famous for her actions during the War of 1812 against the United Kingdom, when she captured numerous merchant ships and defeated five British warships (HMS Guerriere, Java, Pictou, Cyane, and Levant). The battle with Guerriere earned her the nickname of "Old Ironsides" and public adoration that has repeatedly saved her from scrapping. She continued to serve as flagship in the Mediterranean and African squadrons, and circled the world in the 1840's. During the American Civil War, she served as a training ship for the United States Naval Academy. She carried US artwork and industrial displays to the Paris Exposition of 1878.

Retired from active service in 1881, Constitution served as a receiving ship until designated a museum ship in 1907. In 1934 she completed a three-year, 90-port tour of the nation. Constitution sailed under her own power for her 200th birthday in 1997, and again in August 2012, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her victory over Guerriere.

Constitution‍ 's stated mission today is to promote understanding of the Navy's role in war and peace through educational outreach, historic demonstration, and active participation in public events. As a fully commissioned US Navy ship, her crew of 60 officers and sailors participate in ceremonies, educational programs, and special events while keeping the ship open to visitors year round and providing free tours. The officers and crew are all active-duty US Navy personnel and the assignment is considered special duty in the Navy. Traditionally, command of the vessel is assigned to a Navy commander. Constitution is berthed at Pier 1 of the former Charlestown Navy Yard.

USS Constitution Build Information.

Paint

Paint colours and Woodstain are indicated during the build phases. Details of such can be found here:
http://forum.model-space...spx?g=posts&t=23308

Build Jig

It is strongly recommended that the setting of the false keel and rib frames are kept in true alignment during the initial build phases. This can be done by use of a “Build Jig” or “Dry Dock”.  Details of such can be found here:
http://forum.model-space...spx?g=posts&t=20425

Glue

Note that the supplied glue and sandpaper are samples to get you started. The type of wood glue I will be using is “Aliphatic Resin”. This is preferable to normal PVA wood glue as it is fast grab, takes stain, has superior strength, is waterproof when dry,  easier sanding and water clean-up.

The glue type to use on metal components is Superglue gel and/or a fast set Epoxy glue.

Tools

Information on ship modelling tools can be found here:
http://forum.model-space...aspx?g=posts&t=6881

And a range of modelling tools can be found in the ModelSpace online shop:

USS Constitution Pack 1 – Stages 1 - 5

Please note the build stand is not included with the kit but is available to buy here:

http://www.model-space.c...stand-san-felipe-1.html

Stage 1 Contents: Hull frame, false keel, gun deck, anchors, Wood strip, sample glue and sandpaper.

Take the wooden hull pieces and gently sand the edges to remove any laser cutting ash/burrs from them and then check that they interlock with each other without binding. Next take the false keel and glue the frame into the second slot making sure it is square to the keel and leave to dry.

Now take the wood strips and cut them to lengths of 65mm, you should get 3 per strip . When the strips are cut bundle 10 together and use a pencil to blacken the edges. Start glueing the strips to the deck half staggering them like brick work until the deck is covered and leave to dry.

Once dry cut any excess from the edges of the deck and then use a pencil to mark the nails on the ends of the deck planks. Give the planks a light sanding to smooth the planks out.

Glue the stocks to the anchor shanks and leave to dry.

Stage complete.

Store any unused parts in a labelled bag for future use .

Stage 2

Stage 2 contents: Hull frames, gun deck and strips.

Take hull frame 1 and check its fit with the keel sanding if needed to get a good fit then glue it into the first slot on the false keel making sure it is square to the keel in the same way you fitted the first frame in stage 1. Glue frame 3 onto the third slot again making sure it is square to the keel.

Next cut the wood strips to 65mm lengths and darken the edges as you did before then plank the deck in the same way you did the other half in stage 1. Make sure you get the plank stager correct so the flow of planks remains the same from one side to the other when the two halves are test fitted together.

When dry cut off any excess planking and give the deck a light sanding.

Stage 4

Stage 4 contents: Frames, deck and square strip.

Hull frame 5 has a wider gap so it can fit over the keel reinforcement plate you fitted in the last stage. Sand and test fit the frames and then glue them both in place making sure they are square to the keel and leave to dry.

Take the forward deck and check its fit to the frames 3 to 5 once you are happy with the fit glue the deck in place. You can also use small nails for extra security if you wish then leave to dry.

Once the parts are dry take a square strip from stage 3 cut to size and fix it onto the lower knees of frame 3.

Stage 5

Stage 5 contents:- Reinforcements, spar deck, square strip and strips.

Add square strip to the lower knees of frames 4 and 5 and then add another short piece to the centre section of the beam on frame 5 and leave to dry.

Retrieve the two deck halves you planked in stages 1 and 2 and test fit them on the lower beams between frames 2 to 5. Adjust the fit of the decks to the frames with sandpaper if necessary to get a good fit. Once you are happy with the fit glue the decks in place and leave to dry.

Once the deck is dry you will notice the beam that half blocks the foremast slot use a round file to remove the beam blocking the slot being careful not to enlarge the slot or damage the deck strips.

Stage complete.
