Here is a my build diary for my full size R2 D2 build.The main part of the build will be 3d printed.I will buy an aluminum dome and motors and electronics to make him fully functional. This will be a Looong project as there are over 200 pieces to print. here is my progress so far. The base of the body is made up of 6 printed parts.total print time so far 30 hours. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

I am using a Raise 3d printer to print the parts.This machine has a very large print bed which is perfect for the large pieces needed for a full size R2. Here it is printing one of the pieces that sits on top of the base. This piece was about a 7 hour print. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

There are about 200 pieces to print at about 5 hours to print each part so 1000 hours to print and then assembly etc...I am thinking about 2 years. its kind of like a partwork.At the moment I am just printing parts so it doesnt really take any of my time. I will definitely be putting lights and sound in it.As far as motorizing it I want to do that if the frame is strong enough once finished. you can buy electronics that control the dome,lights and most peple use scooter motors for r2s movements.

So I have now printed the base and the first on 3 rings that make up the main body or R2.I has taken about 100 hours of printing to get to this point. The first ring is made up of 12 individual parts.These will now need to be glued together and then glues to the base. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

The second of the 3 rings is made up of 25 individual parts.These parts are quite tall (about 8 inches), but are narrower so they take about 6-8 hours to print. The sections where the shoulders are consist of 3 parts sandwiched together for strength. here is the progress so far on the second ring The large print bed of the Raise 3d is perfect for printing this darbyvet attached the following image(s):

That is looking like something you would find being made in a film studio. It all looks so precise. If i win the lottery (fat chance of that) i will be very tempted by that printer you have. Looking forward to your next updates on this one. Happy Modelling

yes I am pretty amazed at the quality of the 3d files.Everything fits together really nicely and there are tons of tiny holes in the parts for you to put little pegs in to lock everything together.The larger parts also have holes drilled into them so you can use nuts and bolts to fit the parts that will carry weight together.

That does look good Carl. Not having ever looked at a 3D printer, but does it use a lot of material to form the 3D print? Keep up the good work Mark Regards

Keep up the good work Mark The filament comes on spools that are 2.2Kg each.I have used 2 spools so far and I have just started the third one.The spools are about $25 each. I am hoping the full size r2 will be much lighter than the metal ones .Those are often 200-300 pounds in weight. Carl

More work on R2.I have glued the base together and started on the first ring gluing.The second ring has also been printed.The second ring consisted of 22 parts and too about 250 hours to print. The parts fit together very well.There are holes in each part to insert the 1.75 mm filament to aid alignment of the parts. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

More work on R2. The base is now epoxied together and so is the first ring.The second ring is printed and I have also started on the 3rd ring.There are metal rods that are installed on some parts of the second ring which are hinges for the doors.All of the doors on r2 will be operable via servos.you have to insert the metal rods before gluing the ring parts together. darbyvet attached the following image(s):
