Issue 11

Contents:  Manifold Assembly (Lower Half), Petrol Feed Pipe, Air Balance Pipe, Air Cleaner, Screws.

Take the assembly from Issue 10 and fit it onto the lower half of the manifold assembly, aligning the fixing holes.  Press the parts together firmly.  Join the parts by driving two screws into the holes in the triangular plenum chamber.

Take one of the suction chambers provided with issue 10.  Note the keyhole shaped lug underneath which matches the holes in the tops of the carburettors.  Fit the lug into one of the holes and press the suction chamber firmly into place.  Turn the assembly over and insert a screw into the base of the suction chamber to hold it in position.  Repeat the process to fit all three suction chambers.

Take the petrol feed pipe and align it with the assembly, taking it under the triangular plenum chamber.  Align the hole in the union on the lower end of the pipe with the pin projecting from the lower float bowl.  Press the union firmly onto the float bowl pin.  Connect the central union to the pin on the central float bowl then connect the remaining union to the pin on the third float bowl.

Align the air balance pipe with the inlet manifold.  Fit the three projecting lugs on the air balance pipe into the matching holes in the manifold.  Turn the assembly over, holding the parts together insert a screw through one of the holes in the manifold and screw it to the lug below.  Repeat the process to fit the remaining two lugs.
Align the air cleaner with the circular mounting on the underside of the plenum chamber, noting the two fixing pins and the matching holes in the cleaner.  Press the air cleaner firmly onto the fixing pins.

This issue is now complete.  Store the assembly and any unused parts in an issue labelled bag.

Issue 12

Contents: Engine Block and Clutch Bellhousing (Right Side), Starter Motor, Distributor, Screws.

Take the engine block and hold the starter motor with its flange facing the clutch bellhousing.  Note the keyhole shaped recess.  There is a matching lug on the side of the starter, press this into the recess.  Turn the assembly over and drive a screw into the hole to secure the starter to the engine block.

Now take the distributor and align it the right way up.  Once again note the keyhole shaped recess and the matching lug.  Press the distributor firmly into place.  Turn the assembly over and drive a screw into the hole to secure the distributor.

Take the carburettor assembly from issue 11 and align it the right way round.  Note the three holes which correspond to the three lugs on the inlet manifold.  Press the carburettor assembly into place so that the inlet manifold fits flush with the side of the block.  Turn the assembly over and drive screws into the three mounting holes to secure the manifold.

This issue is now complete.  Store the assembly and any unused parts in an issue labelled bag.

Issue 13

Contents: Engine Block and Clutch Housing (Left Side), Filter Head and Hose, Battery Box, Screws.

Take the engine block assembly from Issue 12 and the filter head and hose provided with this issue. There is a keyhole shaped recess on the base of the block and a matching lug on the side of the filter head. Line up the lug with the recess and press the filter head into position, you will add the filter itself at a later stage. Drive one of the screws provided into the hole to secure the filter head. The pipe of the filter head is left projecting below the block, it goes down to the sump which you will fit later on.

Take the battery box, together with the other half of the block supplied with this issue. There are three holes in the battery box, press the two outer holes onto the pins projecting at the bottom of the engine block and drive another screw into the central hole to secure in place.

Please note: The "using the battery box" inset article of issue 13 refers to the A23 battery in good faith because of misinformation from the manufacturer - but as there are no electronics that can be connected to the battery as yet, it is only mentioned as a point of information for readers who could see at a glance that the battery box wouldn’t take any size that they might be familiar with.

At this stage there is no reason for readers to buy a battery as it will be many months before it is required. The correct battery specification will be noted at the relevant point in the magazine and also in advance in Official Jaguar Build just as soon as the battery spec is finalised (courtesy of the manufacturer).

This issue is now complete. Carefully store the assembly and any unused parts in an Issue labelled bag.

Issue 14

Contents: Engine Breather, Ignition Coil, Ignition Lead, Dynamo, Dynamo End Cap, Timing Chain Cover, Pulley, Fan Belt and Pulleys, Screws.

Fit the thicker end of the ignition lead into the notch in one half of the coil. Fit the other half of the ignition coil on top to lock the lead into place. Fasten the two halves together with a screw.

Take the cylinder head assembly from Stage 2 and fit the mounting bracket on the side of the coil onto the bracket on the end of the cylinder head, lining up the holes. Use another screw to secure the coil to the bracket.  Fit the two pins on the engine breather into the other two holes in the bracket, use another screw to secure the breather to the bracket.

Take the fan belt and pulleys and align them with the timing chain cover. Fit the two pins on the pulleys into the two holes in the timing chain cover. Hold the parts in place, turn the assembly over and drive a screw into the mounting hole to secure the pulleys in place.

Take the dynamo, which has a keyhole-shaped hole in one end to match the mounting lug on the timing chain cover. Fit the dynamo to the cover and while holding the dynamo in place, fit a screw through its body and tighten it into the mounting lug. Align the end cap with the body of the dynamo, noting the projecting tab that ensures it fits only one way round. Press the cap firmly into place.

Take the large pulley and line up the two mounting holes in the fan belt and pulleys. Fit the pulley between the fan belt and the cover then drive a screw through the mounting hole. Drive a screw into the remaining hole in the timing chain cover.

This issue is now complete. Carefully store the assembly and any unused parts in an Issue labelled bag.

Issue 15

Contents: Plug Leads, Rear Exhaust Manifold, Forward Exhaust Manifold, Rev Counter Generator Connector, Screws.

The exhaust manifolds go on the left side of the engine block, which you worked on in Stage 13. The rear manifold fits into the three holes at the rear of the block by pressing the pins on the manifold firmly into the holes so that it fits flush with the block. Turn the assembly over and drive one of the screws provided into the central hole to secure the manifold. Fit the forward manifold to the other three holes in the block, adding another screw to secure the manifold in place.

Fit the rev counter generator connector into the hole in the end of the exhaust cam cover.

Take the cylinder head assembly and fit it to the top of the left-hand engine block. The holes in the two fixing tabs should line up with holes in the block, then drive a screw into each of the two holes to hold the head in place. Push the lead from the battery box between the two posts shown in Step 10  (these will hold the wire in position), then make sure the free end fits into the notch on the left.

Take the pulley assembly and align it with the front of the engine block. Note the post projecting from pulley assembly aligns with the matching recess in the block. Fit the dynamo behind the block and slot the post from the previous step into the recess.
Holding the pulley assembly in place, pick up the right-hand half of the engine and align the two sides of the block. Fit the right-hand half of the engine onto the left, making sure that the pulley assembly stays in place and the wire doesn’t get trapped. Holding the engine together, drive a screw into the hole to secure the two halves of the block. Add another screw to the hole near the front of the block and a third screw at the back of the gearbox.

Push the end of the ignition lead from the coil into the central hole in the distributor. Align the plug leads with the cylinder head, holding them the right way round. Taking the cluster of connectors on the end of the plug leads, plug the first of them (the outermost one) into one of the holes in the distributor. Repeat the process with the next connector in turn, carry on until you have fitted all six leads to the distributor. Take the plug leads back over the top of the engine, in line with the inlet cam cover. Plug the first lead into the hole nearest to the ignition coil, the second lead into the next hole along and continuing all along the cylinder head until all the leads are fitted.

This issue is now complete. Carefully store the assembly and any unused parts in an Issue labelled bag.
