Hello again, I have nearly finished planking the upper gun deck. I'm really happy with my build so far. I just put one of the cannons on the deck and found that it sits too high for the gun port. It fits but the barrel is touching the top gun port lining. This made me look through the forum to check if others have had this problem, and I can see plenty have and have managed to rectify it earlier on their build. With my deck near completion I don't really want to rip it out and start again. Or do I raise the gun ports. I could also shorten the height of the cannons. I'm just wondering on what all you more experienced builders think. Should I leave as is or would you rectify? I look forward to your comments. Thanks, Neil

Yes, that came up with people ahead of me and so I was able to adjust the position of the gun port to take account of it. Remember these cannons will hardly be seen once the upper deck is in place especially with the barges on the skids so any changes you make to the height of cannon i.e remove wheels etc, should be ok.

My solution would no be to adjust the gun port to much as the spacing may look odd and it will not look right. Personally I would modify the cannon carriage. take sone metrical out of the side tops so the gun sits lower, you could also file a flat into the wheels so they sit a little lower, won't be seen I don't think but test that first. you could try a combination of adjusting the carriage and taking 1mm out ov the gun port top and adding a wood shim of the same thickness in the bottom of the gun port. just ideas jase “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Hi Neil, I would avoid making alterations or changes to the gun ports themselves. Any changes to these are likely to be a lot more noticeable than any changes you make to the cannons. I think you'll find its not just the gun ports housing these cannons that would need to be altered but the whole row of gun ports on both sides... Regards Alan
