Good Evening from 'The Dockyard'.

This weeks update of my U230 U-boat build will be making the inner pressure hull and fitting the torpedo loading hatch.

The first job was to mark out where the torpedo loading hatch would be located. The attached photo shows the area to be removed.

Once I was relatively happy with the fit of the hatch I removed it and started to then concentrate on the inner pressure hull. In a previous post i fitted the inner pressure but that was only made from 0.25mm thick plastic sheet and thus too thin on it's own. Rather than initially try to wrestle a thicker piece into place, it's easier to work a thinner sheet as it's more manipulative.

The second skin is 0.5mm thick plastic sheet. For it to locate at the rear bulkhead and follow the curve of the inner hull, i fixed a datum piece in place made from 2.0mm square strip. The attached photo shows the strip glued in.

Next up was to level off the edging where the hull meets the brass sheet. This was previously angled and i wanted to level it off to match the look of all the other compartments.

I carefully roughed it out with a dremel fitted with an angled grinding stone before filing to suit.

The attached photo shows the edging being roughed out.

The next job was to make the inner hull from 0.5mm sheet. I decided to split the hull into two sections to make it easier to fit. The front section being the longer one while the back section incorporates the cut -out for the torpedo loading hatch.

The front section took several attempts as i had to make several cuts so that it sat correctly. If too much is removed, which is easy when there are no measurements to reference, i used it as a template and removed less from the next one. I think it was my third attempt when i got the hull template to sit correctly.

The attached photo shows the hull before fitting.

The next job was to fit support pieces for the rear inner pressure hull. This section also includes the cut-out for the torpedo loading hatch.

This section proved to be problematic trying to gauge the depth of the supports. I spent many a head scratching moment and lots of trial and error before i was satisfied. Confused
