A small update here.
In fact, a VERY small update.

I'm going to be adding lots of missing oil lines and linkages etc but first, for the oil lines I need 'Tee' connectors.
The only option was to make one, and copy it.
So far I've cast four. I'm going to need lots more so I'll make another few moulds so I can cast several at a time.
I'm only going to cast them when I'm making other resin parts as each one needs literally a drip of resin. Not practical just to mix that amount on its own.

Roy.

Many thanks chaps.

I've started adding the fuel lines first using 1mm copper wire.
The nuts on the fuel inlet pipes were cut from one of my Tee castings and the joining piece - a Tee casting.
They will be painted brass when the cyano is fully dry.

Supercharger linkages next.

Roy.

Hi Roy (and everyone else looking in)

Here are the pics I said I'd get to you. This is a truly fantastic transkit. The fellow, Reinier Wilderink, produced these, and a fair bit of other really neat stuff. He disappeared a few years ago, and has not been heard from since. I post these mainly to give you an idea of what else will help you kill your Bug. After the RR Torpedo of yours I've seen, I am really looking forward to seeing what you do with this!

(Roy, if you want a scan of the manual, PM me with your email addy)

A lot of these bits can be found in the Model Motorcars Bugatti store. MMC is a bit expensive, and his shipping to that side of the pond is ghastly. If I can re-post, let me know.

Thanks chaps.
I hope my build lives up to your expectations.

Mr. E - Many thanks for the offer of a copy of the manual - PM on the way...

I've added more oil lines, fittings and the supercharger linkages.
All of these parts are missing from the actual kit.
With the resin connectors painted brass, I think it's looking a bit 'busier' - which is what I like.

The cylinder heads will be fitted next after building them up.

Roy.

Thanks Ken.
Looking forward to seeing your Ducati build.

Anyway, moving on a bit.

The cylinder heads each contain working sprung valves which are a PITA to assemble. However, once done they look nice.

The downside is, they are totally pointless as in reality, they do nothing.
OK - When you (eventually) turn the starting handle, the crankshaft turns and the pistons move. The fan belt then turns, rotating the fan. BUT - Pocher made no connection between the fan and the gears for the camshafts.
Therefore, the camshafts don't rotate, so the valves never move...!

I will look at that a bit later on although really, once built, WHO ever plays about with so-called 'working' bits?

Anyway, the camshaft covers have also now been covered with engine-turn decals.
Sadly, they look very dark in the pictures whereas in reality, they aren't dark at all.

Onwards and upwards as they say...

Roy.

A little done over the weekend - the weather was just too nice.

The model has operating valves via the camshafts if you turn them.
Assembling the camshafts was quite easy although the cam lobes were an extremely tight fit on the shaft. The easiest way to fit them was to drill a hole in a piece of wood, place the cam lobe over the hole and gently hammer the shaft through the lobe, continually checking so the lobe ended up in the right place.
The lobe angles were set approximately, using some reference pictures of a rebuilt Bug engine.

Exhaust outlet plate fitted, and engine cylinder head upper plate has had some detail painting.
So far, that's about it for now...

Roy.

Superb work Roy!

How do you make the cast resin parts? It's something I would like to experiment with later in the year for some builds of mine.

Hello Phil.

The little orininal 'Tee' connector was made from small plastic tube and hex plastic rod cut into tiny nuts.
The parts were glued together and then just stuck into a small plastic pot lid as a mould, using d/s tape.
The flats on the hex nuts held the tube parts just clear of the lid.

Silicon rubber was poured in and allowed to set for 24 hours.

Once the 'master' was popped out of the mould, a drip of resin was put in and the mould flexed a few times so the resin went in fully and didn't leave any air pockets.
5 mins later, the resin copy was popped out.

As each one only uses a drip of resin, I make them when I'm casting other stuff and just keep them in a little tin for future use.
Each one is then drilled right through with a 1mm bit.

I've found them to be very versatile - you can cut different legs off to make straight connectors, an elbow connector, and if the little nuts are cut off, it makes pipe joining pieces with no flanges.
Even the off-cut nuts are kept and used for detailing bits.

Quite simple really.

Roy.

OK chaps...
A bit more done on the Bug engine.

The magneto has been assembled and fitted, and I added a wiring tube to the cam cover for the ignition leads to go through.
I'll add those later on.

The supposed 'working' valves are utterly pointless as once the heads are installed, there's no way of seeing anything working, and there'n no way of rotating the camshafts. Still, it was fun to build.

There are a lot of oil pipes that should be on the engine - they are missing from the kit.
To make and fit them will need a good few cast resin Tee pieces. A couple are in place on the front end ready for the pipes to attach.

The rear clutch and bell housing has also now been built up and fitted.
Starting to look fairly big now.

Roy.

Thanks Ken.

Another few bits added to the oil lines.
The resin Tee pieces have been cut up into the required configurations and added to the engine.
The actual pipework is 1mm solder wire which was cut, trimmed, bent, fiddled, trimmed... etc etc until each bit fitted.
Once glued in place with c/a, the fittings were painted silver.
More plumbing still to add.

Roy.
