So I have started building the second ring of the main body. Before assembling this ring you need to put some steel pins in some parts. These will act as hinge pins for the opening compartments on R2s main body. The shoulder parts are made up of three printed pieces that are glued together and then slotted into the shoulder frame. This part needs to be very strong as it is where the legs join the body. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

I have also printed the skirt (the bit that is underneath the main body). These parts were pretty big and took about 12 hours each to print. The parts have recesses for nuts. There are holes in the base ring that align with the nuts so you can bolt the skirt to the base.I used 10-32 nuts and 1 1/2 inch screws. The nuts were epoxied into the recesses in the skirt.Once the skirt has been glue together I will attach it to the basering with the screws. There are some plastic parts that help to hold the parts together. These were very fiddly to install, but help in keeping everything aligned. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Peter I have the RAISE3d N2 printer. It has a 12 inch by 12 inch by 12 inch build volume. It is an awesome printer. There are so many on the market now it is hard to pick one.I chose this one because I have some friends that are professional modelers and they highly recommended it and it has a very large print volume. The prints above are at 100 micron resolution.I am printing some parts now at 50 micron and the parts are very smooth. Will only need light sanding.I am planning to do some very small parts at 10 microns. Those shouldnt need any sanding at all. Its not cheap, but very high quality.it is also very large and heavy (138 pounds). Carl

Thanks Carl. I see what you mean by not cheap . Slightly out my affordable price range. I'll keep searching for a good quality printer that I can afford. Completed - R2D2

There are quite a few people on the astromech forum using a Tarantula 3d printer.Much cheaper and has a large print bed (200mm by 200mm) which you need for r2. https://www.3dhubs.com/3d-printers/tevo-tarantula

Thanks for that Carl, I'm doing a little research on the Tevo 3d printer. Do you know what's the best extruder to order with it and whether to get the automatic bed leveller or not. Peter Completed - R2D2

I would say standard or metal. The dual extruder option is only for when you want to print 2 different colors or 2 different filaments. You can use one filament for the main print and one for supports, but you need to have more advanced design skills to design files.

It's really cool watching this came together. Are you keeping a running total of print time?
