I am always amazed at mankind's ingenuity and inventiveness and I think in the field of aviation, Lockheed have always been the most innovative and it's great that they are the firm that will be at the forefront of this new technology. Boeing aren't far behind though.
Some of the most interesting aircraft that have ever flown have come out of Lockheed's 'Skunkworks' and I find the age when Clarence 'Kelly' Johnson was designing their aircraft as the most interesting!
Good article Tom, thanks.

I read a story about the SR 71 in Air and space magazine.Apparently sometimes the air force pilots like to brag about their airspeed to the local air traffic control tower to make the private pilots feel inadequate. They ask the ground controller for an airspeed check.
An SR 71 pilot told a story once. They were flying over the west coast and an F-16 was flying below them. There was also a single engine Cessna in the same airspace. The F-16 pilot thought it would be fun to mock the Cessna pilot so he called the tower for an airspeed check. The tower replied "500 knots sir".The SR 71 pilot then asked the tower for an airspeed check. The tower replied "2200 knots sir"! The f16 pilot didnt call for any more airspeed checks after that!
