Stage 67 Contains: Grating Pieces, Wooden Strips 0.6 x 5 x 250mm, Walnut Strip 5 x 5 x 300mm, Walnut Strip 2 x 4 x 300mm.

Glue and nail a planking strip from frame 4 to frame 7 on the port side of the hull. Fix another two strips, the first from frame 7 to frame 10 and the second from frame 10 to the stern.

As shown in step 67C fix a further 3 strips to the port side of the hull, from frames 5 to 8, frames 7 to 10 and frames 8 to 11. Complete the row by fitting a strip from frame 5 to frame 4 and another from frame 4 to the bow. Cut the forward strip flush with the rest of the planks at the bow.

Fix another two strips, from frames 4 to 7 and the second above it from frames 4 to 8. Complete the rows by fitting two strips from frames 4 to the bow cutting the strips flush with the rest of the planks at the bow.

As shown in Step 67F fix six more strips to complete two more rows. Now fix a strip within the large gap from frame 4 to frame 7, then fix another two strips from frame 9 to frame 10 and the second from frame 10 to the stern. Trim the plank flush with the stern.

You can now begin to fill the gaps at the stern as shown in Step 67I. Mark the general shape of one the gaps onto a strip then using a sharp knife and sandpaper, shape the strip to fit the gap. Once happy glue the wedge shape into place. Repeat the process for all the other gaps at the stern and the bow.

Repeat all the above steps on the starboard side of the hull.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 68 Contains: Grating Pieces, Wooden Strips 0.6 x 5 x 250mm, Walnut Strip 5 x 5 x 300mm, Walnut Strip 3 x 3 x 300mm.

Fill in any remaining gaps at the stern. Cut them flush with the stern once the glue has completely dried.

Before proceeding with the second layer of planks you will need to prepare the hull. Using a flat metal file, remove the heads of all the nails taking care not to change the shape of the hull. If any strips are recessed, glue another strip over them and then file flush with the surrounding strips as shown is Step 68C.

Turn the hull over and saw off the protruding tabs on the false keel, then sand smooth.

Now begin sanding the surface of the planks. Follow the direction of the strips and ensure you work from forward to aft. Take great care when working on the stern area as the quality of the fit of parts later on can be affected in this area. Don’t forget to sand the central area of the hull always moving the sanding block in line with the strips.

File the strips at the stern down to a thickness of 5mm as shown in Step 68H.
Any areas where the strips are irregular, spread some wood putty over them to fill any gaps and recesses. Once the putty has dried fully, smooth the hull with sandpaper until it is smooth and uniform to the touch.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 69 Contains: Wooden Strips 0.6 x 5 x 250mm, Walnut Strip 5 x 5 x 300mm, Chocks and Squares, Bell, Bell Arch.

Mark and cut one 55mm length and six 18mm lengths from the 5 x 5mm walnut strip.

Refer to Stage 54 for more detailed instructions on how to assemble the columns. Cut out a 5mm section of the first 18mm column 5mm from the end. Carve a triangular recess into each face of the strip at the end of the 18mm section, then cut the first 18mm section off the rest of the strip. Create another 18mm section in the same way. Repeat the process with the remaining four 18mm sections but creating a 2mm notch rather than a 5mm notch as shown in Step 69D.

Carve a triangular recess into each face of the 55mm strip. Cut a 65mm length from the 2 x 4 x 300mm Walnut strip from Stage 67. Glue the two pillars with 5mm notches onto the 55mm strip as shown in Step 65G.

Glue the four remaining pillars onto the 65mm walnut strip as shown in Step 69H. Drill eight 1.5mm holes in the 65mm strip at the points shown in Step 69I.

Paint the two assemblies with clear varnish.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 70 Contains: Pins, Wooden Strips 0.6 x 5 x 250mm, Walnut Strips 2 x 4 x 300mm

Recover the stern gun ports piece from Stage 65. Sand the surface smooth then soak in water to make it malleable. Place the piece from the bottom of the transom on the stern reinforcements to frame 12, as shown in Step 70A.

Glue the piece into position and secure to the reinforcements with nails. When the glue is dry, remove the excess of the stern gun ports piece projecting past the sides of the hull and the transom.

Glue two planks under the stern gun ports on either side of the gap in the centre. Use a rounded file or sandpaper to shape the strips to a smooth curve flush with the surrounding parts, as shown in Step 70D.

Cut eight 160mm lengths of 0.6 x 5mm wooden strip. Glue two of the strips at the bottom of the stern gun ports, when dry cut away the parts of the strips that obstruct the gun ports.

Cover the rest of the stern gun ports piece with more 160mm strips, when dry cut away the sections covering the gun ports and the opening for the rudder.

Glue a strip down the centre of frame 12 in line with the opening for the rudder. Then glue strips at an angle over the starboard side of frame 12 as shown in Step 70G. Trim the ends of the strips in line with the hull and file smooth. Repeat the process on the port side of frame 12 ensuring both sides match.

I chose to paint the Gun ports black now before installing the second planks.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Mark a line down the centre of the transom, then extend the four notches at the side of the transom by cutting away some of the planking strips, as shown in Step 71B. Spread a layer of glue over the transom and apply strips from the centre line outwards.

Cut away any excess strips that extend beyond the edge of the transom and clear the notches at the side of the transom. File the edges of the transom smooth including the top curved edge.

Mark a centre line on the bowsprit bulkhead and glue 0,6 x 5mm wooden strips from this line out to the port and starboard edges of the hull. When the strips are halfway across the gun ports cut the strips away to clear the ports, not forgetting the mast hole. Trim if necessary the edges of the bowsprit bulkhead and file smooth.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 78 Contains: Columns 10mm, Wooden Strips 0.6 x 5 x 250mm, Walnut Strips 2 x 4 x 300mm, Frames.

Take a brown strip and place it against the bow. Cut the strip at the vertical black line as shown in Step 78A and glue into place. Discard the part that curves around the bow. Continue the row by gluing another three strips, cut the excess in line with the stern.

Glue a strip at the bow below the previous row, this should create a triangular gap between the strips. Complete the row going aft, then start a new row at the bow completing this row with another two strips. Trim the excess over the stern.

Glue another row below the previous one, leaving a space at the bow. Start another row from the bow, creating another triangular gap. Cut away the excess at the bow and stern.

Cut away the strips covering the gun ports then bring the starboard side of the ship up to the same point so the sides are symmetrical.

The frames you have received up to this stage will be placed over the gun ports along the top gun deck, Test fit them at this stage and adjust the gun ports if necessary, do not glue in place yet.

Check the window frames received in Stage 76 fit the ports in the bow bulkhead. Adjust the ports if necessary, do not glue in place yet.
