Good Evening from 'The Dockyard'. On this part of my build log of U230 i have 'finally' managed to fit all the t-frames to the inside of the Torpedo Compartment. For the t-frames I used 2.0mm square strip, bent around a sweetner container to form the curve of the hull. I used the two spacers I made in a previous thread when fitting out the Junior Rates Mess and Galley and modified them slightly by increasing their width to better suit the Torpedo Compartment. The reason the spacers were wider was to achieve an equal distance between t-frames and the mdf supports. This was achieved by gluing an extra 3.0mm strip, increasing the width of the spacers to 12.0mm from the original 9.0mm. Before I could tackle the t-frames I first had to file and sand the edges where the inner pressure hull meets the external hull. The attached photo shows the join between the front and rear half of the inner pressure hull being sanded. I made a small, angled piece from plastic strip to continue the cut away angle. A small detail but it adds to the 'flow' of the cut-out. This photo shows the angled piece fitted and filed to suit. I then glued the 4th t-frame as this one would have to align with the existing mdf support. Once fitted I calculated the required width for a further two t-frames inbetween [12.0mm]. This photo shows the 2nd t-frame being cut where it crosses over the torpedo loading hatch well. At sea, two heavy cast iron bars were fitted across the well to strengthen the hull and then removed whilst loading torpedoes. Once I have added detail to the hatch I might retro fit two bars across it as per the real thing. I used a slitting disc to rough out the cuts. This was followed by a small grinding wheel used to carefully remove the majority that was left before a final sand to ensure the cut t-frame ends aligned with the hatch well profile.
