Does any body have any cunning tricks for painting the cannon shot? “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

You could try one of the blackening fluids commonly used by loco modellers, in effect put the balls into the solution rather than paint, and the same with any brass fixing's such as eyebolts and rings etc.

The magazine refers to them as "steel shot" therefore either steel or stainless steel, though more then likely steel, you could test with a magnet or do a water/rust test.
