Hi All, Painted the cell sub-assemblies black. I felt that the photo etched bars provided for the cells was a little too thick. Fortunately, we have CNC engraving machines at our office, so I was able to cut out a new set with thinner bars. The next step is to fit and weather them. Really looking forward to that. I have seen on some posts people have populated their cells with skeletons. Anybody recommendations on where to buy them. They are pretty scarce here in South Africa. I suppose thats it for the next couple of months. Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Garth Very nice update to your build. Unsure of the scale of this model so not its difficult to know what size figures would be suitable. Happy Modelling

Hi All, The ratlines on my Victory have been taking their toll. To maintain some form of sanity, I’ve spent some time on the Pearls decking. Got all the planks glued down. Just a point to remember, if you decide not to use the printed decks, the cells and upper deck support columns need to be compensated for. They can either be cut short, or as I have done, left grooves between the planks for them to fit in. Next step – staining. Still haven’t found suitable skeletons. Thanks Tony for your advice, I estimate the scale to be between 1:60 – 1:80 so I suppose that 28mm wargame figures should do. Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Hi MrT, Steve and Alan, Thank you for looking in and for the comments. Thanks Steve for your advice on the scale. I think I will shelve the idea of some "undead" in the hold - I cant find any suitable figures. I'll pack it with chests & barrels. Kind regards, garth "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! Lovely job there, you could always try your hand at modelling and then making moulds. Hi All, Applied my first coat of stain. I think that it will be fairly dark on the lower decks, so I will try to keep the colors fairly light. Hi All, Thanks to Paul & Alan for looking in and for the kind words. Cant believe its been a year since my last post. As the Victory is almost done, I have been doing catching up on the Pearl. I dry brushed the ribs with light grey craft paint, but I think I will have to do a little more weathering before the next deck is fitted. I used the coffee stirrers to clad the end walls. They will require some weathering as well. Next was the rust for the cell bars. I have never been successful painting rust in the past. But recently I have been doing a lot looking at rusted things (Don’t worry, my wife is a therapist and she knows about this) and breaking rust down into its components and colours. Its really a combination of texture, various shades of reddy browns and orangy stripes where the water has run off. Now to recreate this on my model. I made actual rust paint by soaking steel wool in a 1:3 mixture of bleach and white vinegar. Once the steel wool had formed a rusty paste, I bottled it and added about ¼ matt medium to the mix. This was painted onto the pre-sprayed black bars. I was hoping that the rust process would continue and produce those reddy browns all by them selves. After 3 weeks, the colour remained exactly as I painted it. So, I’m not sure the Real Rust is that successful. What does work though, is that it has produced a great texture. Next I stippled Tamiya Dark Brown & Hull Red randomly over the bars using an old paint brush with stiff bristles. Once dry I glued them onto the wooden frames. Last I dry brushed some GW Boltgun Metal & Chain Mail. Yes I still have the old paints & they still work. As with the other parts, I will give them another round of weathering when they are installed. I have been looking at some techniques of making washes using Artist ink & Future polish??? Defiantly going to give it a go. Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Hi Garth Time flys when you're having fun. Still, nice to see you back on the Pearl. Your attempt at rust has turned out well and it looks good in your pictures and a good description of your technique in making the rust was very informative to me. Look forward to seeing more soon. Happy building David
