Got it Alan thanks.
That can easily be rectified. I'm working from a printout from the PDF files and as they are not full size, it was difficult to see that one. Well spotted Alan. Guess that's not the only slip up I'll make in this build and glad to have friends who can put me on the track.

Thanks Phil, may be slowing down a tad now that the frame is more or less completed.

Thanks again Alan for the heads up. Fortunately, I hadn't glued the top piece to the upright, it was just resting on it and I've found that there's enough 'spring' in the part to allow for the planks to sit behind it . Going to start reading ahead now and study the instruction photos close up on the PC.

Hi again friends
My Pc has been throwing a wobbly today and although I managed to get a quick post earlier, it is only now that things seem to have settled down. So, onwards and upwards
STAGE 04
Well, love it or hate it, today's update although short, and caused me a lot of blood, sweat and tears and although the worst is over now there's still a little work left to complete it satisfactorily.
So what has caused me such anguish?
You guessed it. Fairing the hull.
Although L'Hermione isn't a particularly large model, she certainly gave me my fair share of problems due to the smaller working areas and my chubby fingers.
When the work was finished, I used a length of veneer (from the decking fitted earlier) to act as a guide to show me how much needed to be shaved off each frame to produce a smooth bend for the planks to lay on.
I end with a few images of progress so far bearing in mind there are still one or two areas that need a final going over for my satisfaction.

Thanks Mark, you know it's only when one looks at the pictures after posting that I see what extra work needs to be done. Things I didn't spot with the naked eye now show up like a sore thumb (which I've got now after all that sanding LOL). The camera seems to show up all the irregularities in the work.

Hi everybody, welcome back to another L'HERMIONE update
STAGE 05
After completing the hull fairing, we can now move on to the first stage of the planking of the hull.
To locate the correct position for the first plank the instructions provide a measurement from the top of each frame to the point where the top of the plank will be.
After marking these points out on the frames, the bow section of the planks needed to be shaped to fit the curvature of the bow. Not having too much luck with the electric plank bender, I decided to revert to using my Amati plank bending tool.
The length of plank was then fitted and glued into place whilst allowing a 4mm gap at the bow where the keel will eventually be fitted.
At this point, the four parts of the main deck were temporarily located in position and held together with masking tape. They are used as a guide to help with the lay of the planks on the upper part of the hull and will be removed again when the upper planking is complete.
The next plank covers midships to transom and on inspection of the PDF file on the PC, there looked to be a very slight curvature of the plank upwards from frame #9 (midship) to the transom, so I popped them in hot water to soak for a while to make them more pliable - the 2 x 5mm wood supplied is quite rigid and would not bend easily on its own.
Each plank was left clamped to the hull for several hours to allow the glue to dry.
After successfully laying the first row on both sides of the hull, I proceeded to lay the 2nd row of planks above it, and that's as far as I've got so far with this stage.

Another great update David and all looking good.... .. You shouldn't encounter any problems planking the upper part of the hull, the curvature at the very top of the bow can be a little tricky though..... Planking the lower hull as per the instructions produces a cramped and clinkered bow so you may like to change it to your own preferred method of planking..... .. Great work.... Regards Alan

Hi Gandale,
Thanks for the advice Alan, although I did meet a small problem in the midships area around frames #8 and #9 when laying the 2nd row of planks due to the bulge (tumblehome I think it was called on the Victory)on the frames and it necessitated chamfering the lower side of the plank somewhat and even then it didn't seem to lay right. I guess that will be sorted out with the sanding and filling when the hull is finished.
I'll probably follow the build instructions for the lower planking as I'm not too experienced at this and I shall be painting her (this will be a first as well) anyway so provided everything is smoothed out satisfactorily, it hopefully will not be a problem.
