Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This week's update continues with riveting the bow section using embossed plastic transfers. Quite a slow job and not without mistakes as decals would tear, curl up, twist or get accidentally rubbed off as I handled the boat!  . The attached photo shows the continuation of the rivet lines on the port side. In this photo to the left of the last line of rivets you can see a vertical pencil line crossed at intervals. This is the marking out for the port bow draught marks. Type VIIC U-boats had six draught marks; three on the port side [bow, mid-ships and stern] with the same layout on the starboard side. I wanted to get the draught marks fixed before I continued with the embossed rivets to make them easier to apply. I used photo-etched brass numbers supplied by Cornwall Model Boats. The smallest set of numbers were the ones most suitable as they are 1.0mm high equating to 2" [50mm] on the real thing. This photo shows a piece of electrical tape being used as a guide as to where the numbers would be fixed. Not only is the tape acting as a datum edge so the numbers are in line but also as a rule with the 2.0mm spacings marked onto the tape. These draught marks are at the actual scale height as per the real U-boats. As you can see the top number is zero, descending in value down to one [0, 9, 8 etc]. The zero on the real u-boats represents 50 decimetres [10 decimetres per meter], or 5 meters from the bottom of the keel. Dividing this number by 48 [1/48 scale] is approximately 104mm. This measurement was marked onto port bow and the tape with the markings was stuck so that the top edge of the tape aligned with that mark. The number nine represents 49 decimetres, number eight is 48 decimeters and so on. This system is used on the bow and midships draught marks only, the stern is slightly different and I will cover this in a later update.
