Hi Chris and thank you. Work is slowing down a bit now with the planks being laid one at a time and allowing plenty of drying time in between, but at least this build is going quite smoothly with no major problems yet.

Hi David, happy to help as always.... You'll find you will need to chamfer quite a number of planks in order to achieve the curvature and especially at the top of the bow.... As you are painting the hull (as I will be doing) then planking as per the instructions should be fine but will require quite a bit of sanding..... Hi friends, her's another update on the L'HERMIONE build.
STAGE 5 (part 2)
After a painstaking few days, I have finally finished the upper hull planking and I'm now ready to remove the main deck (which was temporarily placed to help with the planking) and smooth it off. I appear to have gained an extra row of planks when comparing my model to the pictures in the instructions but I guess when sanded down to the heights indicated in the instructions things will work out - at least I hope they will
The photos show the flow of progress through this stage - warts and all!

Thanks Phil, just finished sanding down the tops of the planks: now it looks more like the instruction photos. Going to spend the afternoon shaping and sanding down the outside of the planks in readiness for working on the gun ports. That should be interesting but at least there's only 15 each side, unlike the 100 or so on the Victory LOL

Thanks Martyn but we'll have to wait and see how the planking turns out alright. I'm not too happy with it all the 'lumps and bumps' at the moment but it should be satisfactory when the sanding is finished.

Well done David, progressing very nicely... .. You found the same as I did, lots of bumps and humps and you'll have lots more appearing yet with the lower hull... Still, as you say everything should work out ok when everything is finally sanded, its amazing how different these models looks when the sanding phase is done..... .. The planking isn't too bad really. It's all the sanding afterwards that takes the time especially when I've left the glue to set where it squeezed out of the joints without wiping it off beforehand. It's amazing how it seems to go harder than the wood I'm trying to sand.

Thanks guys, I've spent most of the afternoon on one side of her and most of the lumps and bumps have disappeared just like you said they would. But I've made harder work for myself by not wiping the glue off where it's squeezed out of the joints. It's gone really hard now and I've really got a sweat on today trying to get rid of them. Lesson learnt.

Your progressing well David. Those little issues will be sorted and the the things you`ve learnt will stop you doing the same again. Thanks Derek, I do hope I can do it justice, it's all a learning curve for me. All I can do is follow the instructions and get help here if required.
I've definitely learned to wipe excessive glue off the planks as I lay them . I dare say I'll learn lots more in this build.

Welcome back to the L'HERMIONE build
STAGE 06
Just a quick update today as stage 6 is solely concerned with shaping the tops of the upper planks to conform with the levels of the tops of the exposed frames. I used my davids plane to get most of the surplus wood off and then used a sanding stick to finish off and achieve the correct profile - at the stern, there is a gentle upward slope from around frame #10 up to the transom - finishing level with the top of part #28 of the transom assembly.
I've already finished sanding one side of the hull plnking but more of that in the next update.
