Thanks for looking in Phil.
Yes she's starting to show her lines now but work is slowing down considerably now that the framework is complete. However, it's my intention to work through at least 1 stage of the build every 2 or 3 days (maybe more with several of the stages which have 3 or 4 subsections) because my goal is to complete the hull in 6 months.
Happy building

Hi friends
Been searching for a new air compressor for a while and found this reasonably priced one at my local(ish) hobby store.
I've posted the details in the tools section of the forum, but here are some pics of what my new set up looks like. All I have to do now is learn how to use itBigGrin .
Happy building

Hi friends

In case you're wondering where my next update is, it's because I've been having a real 'headache' with positioning and cutting out the gun ports.

After I cut out the templates from the sheet included with the kit and mounted it on the hull, it was quite noticable that the ports at the bow and the stern were far to high (the template must be correct so what am I doing wrong).
Well, after some tooing and froing PM's to Gandale to whom I am indeed very grateful to have on board for such advice, we discovered that the instructions can sometimes be incorrect for our builds, everyone's model will be slightly different to somebody else's due to inconsistancies in wood thickness, width, etc; and our individual interpretations of what's required of the build.

To cut a long story short, I ended up having a careful look at the pictures in the instructions relating to this part of the build whilst having my hull in front of me at the same time.

What I noticed was that in the images, the bottom edge of the gun ports were roughly 2 planks up from the lower edge give or take a mm or so all the way along the hull.
Doing away with the kit template, I proceeded to mark out botttom edge of the ports from the images to my hull (I had already drawn the ports on my hull), then realigned my ports with that mark.

Because there was now a 2nd set of ports superimposed over the first ones. I had to be very careful where I was cutting. To do this I made a 'jig' (from some offcuts of spare wood from previous builds)so that I could be certain all the 'new' ports were the same size, then started the cutting out operation which is where I'm at now.

When I've finished the gun ports, I'll post another update on progress, so see you all soon.
Thanks for looking in and
happy building
David

Hi friends, here's another update on the L'HERMIONE build

STAGE 7

Here are some photos of the gun port template which caused all my distress. As you can see from the images, when the positions were transfered to the hull, the ports at the stern were almost 1 plank too high and the same at the bow. The issue was resolved with the help of gandale - a big thank you Alan - and I was able to proceed with the rest of stage 7.
I will post another update on this work shortly.
In the mean time thanks for looking in and
Happy building

Thanks for the good words guys, and yes I've got my airbrush cleaning kit sorted, I've even gone and bought myself an 'Ultrasonic' cleaner and some Iwata 'Superlube' to keep it in tip top condition. Thanks again, and more to follow very shortly.

Hi friends, thanks for the comments and on to the continuation of:

STAGE 07

As was explained in the last 2 update posts, I had hit a descrepancy between the model and how the instructions (templates) show where the ports should be.
Having overcome the problem, and with new markings on the hull, the next job was actually cutting out the gun ports.
The pictures show the work flow which started with a 2mm hole drilled through the centre of the 'opening', followed by 4 further holes drilled at the corners and well inside the pencil lines.
I then used a modelling knife to cut away any excess wood until I was close to the inside edges of the 'openings', finishing off with a small diamond file and sandpaper stick.
I made up a 'jig' the correct size of the 'opening' to ensure that all the ports would be of the same size. (It must be an optical illusion, but in the images some ports look a different size to others and this must be due to the shape of the hull. With the exception of 2 of the ports, my 'jig' fitted snugly into each opening.
The last couple of images show the completed work as it is now.
More to follow soon.
Happy building
David

Welcome back to the L'HERMIONE build diary.

STAGE 08

This a small stage in the build. The only thing to do here is to paint the hull stiffeners and stern black so they don't show through the gun ports and the transom windows.
Photos taken while paint still wet hence the sheen in the images, it's drying to a matt finish as I speak.
Thank you all for looking in again and for your words of appreciation.
Happy building
