It's starting to take shape, nice update. I got the Tevo tarantula and have built it. I'm just calibrating it, to get good prints. Thanks for the advice. Completed - R2D2

Its a great idea to build your own 3d printer.I built the IDOX by model space. These machines do need some maintenance and it is important you understand how they work when it comes to troubleshooting problems. Would love to see some pics of it and some prints. Thingiverse has a downloadable calibration print that you can use to test your printer. It has all of the difficult shapes on it so you can see how your printer does. Here is a link to it https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:704409

tigerace wrote:It`s an outstanding looking frame Carl will you be fitting a tray to the top of R2 like in "return of the Jedi" regards Phil I thought about it Phil, but my R2 will be permanently 3 legged. You can buy motors and stuff to make his 3rd leg retract so he can stand up straight, but a lot of people on the R2 forums say he is not very stable and tends to fall over when transitioning to 2 legs. The trays that are made only work when R2 is standing up straight. I'm waiting on some upgrade parts that I ordered. A cooling fan, glass for the bed and a few other little bits. Then I'll start to print some brackets to make the frame more stable. Completed - R2D2

Hi Carl Your build is really taking shape, looks great.
I've got my own 3D Printer (Smaller bed size than yours at only 13cmX13cmX13cm), where did you get the files from for the build? as I quite fancy having a go at making building myself at a reduced scale.
Cheers Mark

Cheers Mark The files are free to download from the astromech.net which is the official R2 D2 builders club. There is a section on 3d printing. Deagostini does have a 1/2 scale R2 D2 kit.I dont think scaling down the full size files will not work because there are alignment holes which will be too small to use if you reduce the size. There are files for 3d printers with smaller print beds, but it will obviously increase your total print time. It has taken about 600 hours of print time for me to get this far with my R2 D2 and that is with a printer with a 30 cm by 30cm by 30 cm print bed. You can probably find a 3d model on thingiverse if you want to print a smaller one.The one at astromech is approved by the club which means you can add the motors and electronics they use in the metal R2 builds and everything should fit. Here is a link to the Deagostini R2 .I have it and it is excellent. http://www.model-space.com/us/build-r2-d2.html

Carl Hi Carl, Thanks for the info. I'm doing the Deagostini build (currently on issue 32) and your right, it sure is an excellent build. I'll have a look at the astromech site, I just want a serious project to try out to move my skills/knowledge before investing in a more advanced Printer. Thanks again, I'll keep an eye on your build progress with interest. Mark

The longest print so far.27 hours.Used 400g of filament. This is the top of R2s right leg. Always a challenge printing large flat parts because of the parts lifting off the print bed.Set the print bed to 65c and it stuck like glue. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

I started working on the detail parts for R2.The Raise 3d is not so great for really fine detail so I printed these parts on the Form2 SLA printer. These are the greeblies for the right leg horseshoe and one of the front vents. The vent is the largest piece I have printed so far with the form2.This was an 11 hour print. darbyvet attached the following image(s):
