More progress being made with the launch tower kit. The base was bondo-ed and sanded down. There are a bunch of pieces of equipment that sit on the rim of the cavity where the rocket sits.There are photoetched pieces that go around the rim with holes in them.I secured the pieces to the base and marked out the holes to be drilled.These are for pins that will go into the equipment to anchor them to the base.The kit gives you screws to use, but the access under the base is pretty tight so I decided to use brass rod instead.The base was painted matt black on the sides and concrete for the top and inner ring.I used some light green around the rim so the concrete wont show through once the photetched brass is installed. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

More work on the base.I glued pins to the base for the equipment to anchor to.There is a mistake in the instructions.The 2 tall pieces of equipment are shown backwards in the instructions.Fortunately I figured this out before gluing them in place.The equipment will be painted and then some of the pieces will be glued to the base.The 4 large pieces are the base for the towers that support the lower part of the Soyuz rocket.They will be glued on first and then the other boxes added as the rest of the support towers are built.There is not much room between the pieces of equipment so you need to plan ahead with this build or you wont be able to get access to parts down the line. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Thanks guys, Moving along.THis kit has a LOT of photoetched metal.It is used for all of the support towers.The metal is quite soft and the parts are quite long in many cases.I decided to solder the pieces together rather than use superglue for added strength. I used a combination of regular soldering and resistance soldering.The benefit of resistance soldering is that you can hold parts together with the electrode,apply the current to melt the solder and keep holding until the solder sets. Resistance soldering is great when you need to apply heat in a very precise manner. I tinned the edges of the pieces using the soldering iron, then clamped the pieces into my magnifying station and used the resistance soldering unit to melt the solder.The end result was quite a solid piece, even though the metal was very thin. It is a bit tedious to do it this way, but it will mean less trouble as the build progresses with superglued joint failures. The metal parts were cleaned with a flux remover and then sprayed with acid etch primer and regular primer. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Very nice setup you have yourself there Carl. Nevet tried resistance soldering but but it in action on youtube and the like and it looks a great way of working with fine detail. Happy Modelling

there is a bit of a learning curve with resistance soldering.The parts have to be very clean and the electrode tips need to be cleaned a lot or you dont get good contact and you get sparks and the metal doesnt heat up well.There is also some trial and error with how long you apply the current for.It is great for these parts though.The units are also quite expensive, but American Beauty makes a unit for modelers which is much moire reasonably priced.Thats why the unit has a picture of a train on it-They sell it to railroad modelers who build brass trains.

Painting painting painting. The color scheme for this model is not that complex, but the photoetch parts are so delicate you cant mask them so I have a ton of parts being painted at the moment before I start assembly.Once these are all painted their respective colors I can start assembling the first stage support towers.here is my spray booth filled with primed parts waiting for paint. Making nice progress with this Carl and you have my sympathies with all of that etchwork but at least you know it will end at some point if you keep going! 
I'm a fan of 'Real Space' so will be following this all the way - well done.

More progress on the launch tower.There is a hazard strip around the base of the tower.This is obviously circular.I have scoured the internet looking for hazard pattern that is circular with no success so I had to make one.I got some yellow decal trim film and made a ring of the correct diameter using my 3d printer.I traced the outline of the ring onto the decal film and then used black pinstriping tape to make the black hash marks on the yellow film.I then clearcoated everything to make sure the tape didnt lift up when I soak the decal in water.next step is to fit the decal onto the base.Once this is done I can start installing the tower equipment on the base.
