Finishing up.
Rope Coils. The lsat remaining item is to add the rope coils on the belaying pins. My advice would be to do this as you progress through the rigging stages as I found some of them tricky to place
Each belaying pins that has rigging tied off should have a rope coil which are formed on a jig.
create a jig by pushing two pins through a piece of scrap wood 15mm apart. A piece of wood that fits between the nails is used to to keep the rope coil at the top of the nails and give space for tying off.
Important Note. the thread used for the rope coils should be the same as the thread that is on the belaying pin.
To create the coil loop the thread around the nails 4 times. secure one end of the thread in some blue tack or similar. remove the wood spacer from the jig and with the free end of the thread throw two clove hitches around the loop, offset from centre to form one loop larger than the other, the small loop will go over the belaying pin head. place the coil on the pin using pea glue to fix in place. using a crocodile clip weight the bottom of the coil so the it hangs correctly and use water down PVA on the thread to hold its form, once dry remove the crocodile clip.
Display stand
The building stand supplied in the kit can be used as a display stand. sand the stand down so that there are no rough edges. the stand can then be painted a colour of your choice, I went with black. I used some red felt glued to the cradle to give a nice tight fit with the hull. The brass name plate should be painted with a colour of your choice, I went with blue, use acrylic paint and after a few moments wipe the drying paint away with a dry cloth leaving the words flooded with paint. if you need to a piece of tissue paper damp with white spirit can be used to lift any paint. attach the name plat to the stand with CA glue.
HM Schooner Pickle is now complete.
Final thoughts.
There is a lot of spares left one the kit is finished so do not worry if you lose or break the odd item as you go, there is spare strip wood of each type as well as spare etch, fittings and some laser cut wood components. The quality of the kit is exceptional as is the detail of the instructions. one way or another all the basics of building wooden period ships are covered in this kit so it is great for a novice with some modelling experience.
lastly I would like to thank everybody model space members and guests who have visited the build and especially those who have left comments of support, it is greatly appreciated.
