HI again,
So I just picked up my kit of the Santa Maria. A truly beautiful galleon. Incidentaly this will be my first ship that has "ratlines and shrouds" (or as I call them, the mast rope-ladder thingies).
Can someone give me any advice on how to do this please? I don't really know (newbieness shining through in all its glory). From what the model shows it looks like simple knots, but wouldn't knots on a long rope (the shrouds) just slip down?
This newbie would appreciate any tips from all the experts out there.

My advice would be to get started on building the model, items such as ratlines are way down the line and should be looked at when the time comes, where you will have all to hand/built for a better understanding of what is required.
What I can recommend is that you purchase 'The new Period Ship Handbook' by Keith Julier, which contains a wealth of practical information on building period ship models, and has specific sections and line drawing's of how to go about rigging and ratline's etc etc.

i cheat and use a needle to put the rat lines through the middle of the shrouds keeps them level and tie off boath ends leaving the middles ones to be adjusted then apply waterdown pva

Like Tomick says they are way down the line, I am 9 months into my build and haven't even got the Top deck planked yet..

I've just had a look through all the various forum topics, and sub forums, I've asked before about a hints and tips/tutorial topic/sub forum, Magpies ratlines tutorial is an obvious example of a topic that should be put into a separate area, and not buried away in general chat, where there is so much good advice. I know everyone is willing to help anyone who asks a question, but so many time we see the same questions being asked, with the answer being "have a look here .......... this is my tutorial on that subject". So admin is there any chance of a tutorial sub forum? Come on you Jimmies

I agree with Tomic! Keith Julier's handbooks are awesome and packed with handy hint's and tips that he has tried and tested over his many years of ship building When I build the ratlines, I tie the knot then apply a small drop of diluted PVA glue to seal the knots.
