Hi all,

I've been slowly building SoTS for a while now (taking my time considering that it's my 1st ship build), and diligently following Tomick's official build diary alongside the official instructions, as well as leaning on the guidance in this excellent forum on more than one occasion!

I've reached issue 18, and have fitted the Garboard plank on both sides as per the instructions. I assumed that the straight edge should be fitted against the keel, with the tapered edge on the "outside" - a decision I doubted myself on until reading MWG's post here.

The question I have now, is how do I fit the 2nd row? Is it the tapered or straight edge of the 2nd plank that joins with the tapered (outside) edge of the Garboard plank? (and same question for the subsequent rows). Some pics below for clarity:

My garboard plank

2nd plank taper to Garboard taper?

2nd plank straight to Garboard taper?

Tomick also advises to "fit a second row of strips alongside the ones already fixed on both sides of the keel and ensure that the taper is maintained" in his instructions. Can anyone explain what "ensure the taper is maintained" means here?

Many thanks!
Michael

Hi Michael,

First of all welcome to the forum, hope you find your time with us positive and enjoyable....Cool Cool

I'm afraid the information MWG has provided is not quite right and as a result I have deleted the topic to avoid any further confusion. MWG method was of his own making and was not in keeping with the instructions or the official build. Fitting the garboard plank gets a lot of first time ship builders so you're not alone in this regard.

You have tapered and fitted the first row of planks so here is how to go about fitting the second row.

Take a strip and temporarily fit against the previous strip fitted. When fitting the second strip ensure you allow the plank to sit where it wants to go as it goes round the bow and over the keel, ie, do not apply any lateral movement up or down. You should then find the strip will want to climb over the top of the strip you have just fitted, this is the start of your taper and you should mark this point then taper to the end. The tapered edge goes against the first plank giving you a straight edge to work against for your next row of planks.

Once you are happy with the fit and you have the necessary curve to the plank then pin and glue into position. When dry you can then trim the plank where it crosses the keel to give you the 4mm gap you need.

Hope this helps, come back to me if you have any further queries.

Regards

Alan

Hi Alan,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply and explain - makes much more sense when you know what the right answer is! BigGrin Seems clear to me now that tapering is to ensure that the planks join the keel and/or their neighbouring planks at the right angle, given their tendency to turn inward and they approach the bow (hope I haven't missed the point entirely!)

I'll attempt the repair as per your advise and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks!
Michael
