Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This week's update of my U230 U-boat build is all about the paint! After many weeks of riveting it's now time to break out the spray gun and give this boat some colour. Before i started I had to check fit some of the supports for the rudders so that I wouldn't have to mess about once the paint was on. This proved to be worthwhile when looking at the part-works instructions, two, 5mm holes had to be drilled to accept the locating pins for the rudders. Once happy with this i made an area in the middle of my kitchen, sitting the boat on a small table, all covered with dust covers. By doing this i could walk around the boat, working on one area and then moving to the other side with easy access. I chose to prime the boat in Vallejo white rather than grey primer as i felt the latter would prove difficult to define once I started putting colour on. The attached photo shows the bow in primer. Spraying took a long time in all of the different stages due to the large surface area. Looking further aft. What you see is the result of several thin coats, building up an even finish. The different materials that make up the boat; plastic, brass, filler in places and glue, all had a different effect on the paint when keying it in. Once i was happy with the priming stage, it was now time to start applying some colour. After a bit of research on the different paints used on U-boats and more research to see what paints were out there, i purchased two paint sets by Life Colour; German Navy WWII set one and two. I found out that U-boats during the War were, generally, painted in Dunkelgrau 51 [medium grey] and Hellgrau 50 [light grey] above the waterline and Dunkelgrau 52 [dark grey], below. These three shades of grey were covered by the two sets; two colours from set one and the other from set two. I started with the medium grey as this is the dominant colour above the waterline. I didn't mask off any areas at this stage, just made sure I sprayed the paint well below were the dark grey would start. One of the reasons i like the look of U230 in the later stages of it's short life is that it sported light grey, camouflage stripes. I used Hellgrau 50 [light grey] for the camouflage after studying a photograph of the real boat in La Spezia in 1943 and reading Dougie Martindale's article on U-boat paints. That just looks so good now all the parts are blended in with some paint. And all that rivet detail you added was well worth the extra work as it adds another level of outstanding detail to your model. Happy Modelling

I made sure i added thinners to the paint to prevent losing the rivet detail. There were a couple of moments after finishing a coat when I thought 'I can't see any rivets', realising all those weeks of work were in vain, only for the paint to dry and they all reappeared! <sigh of relief>  Regards, Phil W. Once I had removed all of the masking tape I sprayed matt varnish over these areas to seal the paint. Next step was to mark out the dividing line betwween the medium grey and dark grey. The dark grey covers the majority of the boat. I clamped a pencil to an engineers square to use as a marking out tool. This photo shows the dividing line being marked out.
