OK, so here is another update on my first wooden ship build. The planked deck went on fine. I just took my time and glued it down to the bulkheads one at a time. Took about a week but it worked out fine and I am happy with the result and my warped keel is straight as an arrow now. I glued on all the reinforcement bits and fared them best I could. I should have been a little more patient with this step. Also, put the first 3 strakes on with some apprehension and uncertainty despite reading, looking at other builds and watching many videos on the interwebs. I left them long on both ends for trimming and sanding. The ones in the middle look uneven but they are not just overlapping for now. I need to steam them and twist them to follow the shape of the transom still. If anyone sees where I could do better please speak up. Also, are the strakes supposed to bend up along the shape of the transom all the way to the deck? The instructions aren't very clear on this part. I have some gaps and blunders but I can fill these in with scrape bits and wood filler before sanding. Right now, I just want to get the correct shape of the hull, and when I put the second set of planking on, I will be more patient and plan better. Coming along nicely Ron I think I would have filled the bow with balsa fillers at the start so you have something to glue the planks to as the kit doesn't give you a lot of frames for fixing them to . Rgd Martyn Building ? Completed. Soliei Royal . Sovereign of the Seas . Virginia . Scotland . San Felipe . Corel vasa , Santisima Trinadad X section , Vasa Next Build ? Rgd Martyn Thanks Martyn and Tony, I did read about this and have seen others do that technique. I will try it on my next ship. Best Regards, Ron

Hi Ron Your build is starting to take shape now, well done, and I'm glad to hear your initial problems are now sorted out. It's always best to work slowly and methodically with these type of model, so take your time and the results will show. I'm sure you'll glean a lot of information from all the other modellers who have posted their builds on here, which will be a great help when the instructions don't supply you with the details you need to complete a certain stage of your build. This is a model that I really like and would like to be able to buy it myself at some time, but in the meantime, I'll be happy just following along with you so I hope to see more of your work as you progress. Happy building David

Hi Ron, looks to be progressing nicely. I haven't built this kit myself or seen the instructions however, I think you will find the information contained within this link helpful. It shows how the stern was planked and how the finish was achieved... .. Have a look and should you still have concerns then do get back to me and I'll advise further..... http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/wipmaid.html

Hi Ron. Its quite a complicated stern on the Maid - I found these on the internet which might be of help: https://modelshipworld.c...h-maid-stern-structure/
and http://www.ianlawrencemodels.com/wipmaid.html
It seems there are a couple of different stern designs, one with a flat transom and decoration and another with a herring bone pattern of planks. I would say from the look of the stern you probably should continue the first planks up to the deck level - these are only the foundation for the better top planks so it doesn't matter quite so much 'how they look' as long as they follow the lines of the hull. Best of luck with her and hope the above proves of use! Robin. Thanks guys for the help. Much appreciated. I have seen Ian's build and it's a great reference. Sent him an email also. The other forum I haven't seen. Will look at it more when I get home. I have read that pdf... very helpful. Was just struggling with the transom. Will post again when I have things fixed and more progress. Best Regards, Ron

Looking good Ron, Ian Lawrence is quite a character. He is very friendly and is very helpful if you have any questions. The benefit of the double planking is that the first layer doesnt have to be perfect. However, it does pay to get it as good as you can or the errors will be visible in the second layer.

Here is another update on the "Maid". Finished with the first set of hull planks. Its not pretty and there are lots of mistakes but, I learned a lot during this process. Following the provided instructions I glued the first three strakes and then went from there. I received an email from Ian Lawrence and he confirmed for me that indeed the planks bend around and up the transom to the deck. I have a lot of filling and sanding to do and I have yet to bend the last two strakes to the transom.(First picture with red arrows) Will probably do that later tonight. As I was nailing one of my strakes to the bulkhead I used a little too much force and broke the opposite strake. (Second picture with red arrows) Its hard to see but it broke in three places so I glued it straight best I could and then put a scrape piece behind it to reinforce it. After I was done putting all the planking on and it was dry, I "painted" all the plank joints with a mix of glue and water for added strength. After I bend the last two planks to the transom I am going to give it an initial sanding and trim away the extra bits that don't belong. Then I will fill all my gaps and bobbles with wood filler and shape and sand till I get the hull shape I need. I was a little confused on the area where the planking meets the rudder. I have seen many builds where this area is thinned before planking so that the area isn't wider then the keel. The instructions didn't mention anything about doing that so I left it. I am thinking that was a mistake now. If so I can do some creative grinding and sanding to get it to the proper width. I will update again when I have the hull the shape it is supposed to be. Not a bad job for your first try at planking and dont worry too much what it looks like as they all look rubbish until the sanding starts. What your after is a good flat base to attach the second planks to so get that right and you should do ok. Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Yea for my first time doing this I was pretty happy with the result. I knew it wasn't going to be perfect and everyone said not to worry about it too much so I just forged ahead. Best Regards, Ron
