1/43 scale plastic stools. I thought these were supplied in white metal until they arrived. I might use them as templates and make my own out of stained wood to give a more realistic feel. These two stools will occupy the comms shack and sound room [sonar shack]. A wall mounted clock. I will reduce it's length before fitting it to the Junior Rates mess so that it better suits the space. Last but not least; a toilet, cistern and loo roll holder! This will be fitted in the Senior Rate Mess. Again, a 1/43 scale item, so slightly too large, but I will file and cut were appropriate to reduce it's size to better suit 1/48 scale. Loving all these little details you are adding, they will certainly bring the boat to life.

Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. Similar to last week, progress has been slow. Three to four coats of paint meant I only completed the Officers /Senior Rates mess, but it now sports an even coat ready for detailing, weathering and toning. The attached photo shows the Officers /Senior Rates mess painted matt white. This compartment also houses the Captain's Cabin, Radio/Radar shack and the 'Funk Raum' [funk room] which is the Sound/Sonar shack. Can't wait to start fitting this out..... That's it painting wise, so following the theme of the last two updates, I thought I would post a further selection of after market parts to add detail. The attached photo shows two, resin torpedoes plus brass etched fins and propellers. I bought these from ebay [Germany], not long after the original AMP shop, also based in Germany and supplying these resin parts, closed down; this was Aug 2015. This photo shows three, white metal taps. These can be fitted to pipework where the crew would want a fresh water supply for drinking and cleaning. As with a lot of the after market parts I've bought, they are scaled at 1/43 [O Gauge], which makes some items look out of place against the scale of the u-boat's 1/48. Other items blend in well and looking at these taps I don't think there will much work involved to ensure they 'sit' within the compartments. Other parts I've bought, such as the toilet, is far too big as is and would look a little 'Alice in Wonderland' without some corrective work. Two valve bodies, minus hand-wheels. Again, 1/43 scale, but would sit just as well within a 1/48 environment in the right context. The good thing about this model is the fact that submarines, by their very nature, sport a multitude of different sized valves, hand-wheels and gauges. Another factor when modelling in 1/48 scale, is the many hours I've spent looking online, with mixed results, for a suitable crew. Currently I have bought two sets of submarine crew from Historex Agents. Three crew members in set 1 and two in set 2, mean I have a total of 5! . Great castings in white metal, very good quality and each figure has their own personality. There is another link I've saved from a French supplier of 1/43 scale figures https://www.mk35.com/en/15-figures which looks very good. On this French site, there's not any submarine crew specific figures, but plenty of characters in various poses which could be used. Most of the crew didn't wear a uniform as such at sea, mostly overalls or rolled up shirts sleeves, so some of these figures would blend in well I feel. Figures sat down, pouring a coffee, lying down and one even having a pee! I've seen packs of 3D printed 1/48 scale submarine crew, but to be honest, compared to the detail and character of the white metal figures, they're not even close. So i'll stick with white metal for now and see how the boat fills out over time as I add them. The attached photo shows the card for the first set of submarine crew from Historex Agents. Two of the figures from this pack. I didn't want to open up the packets just to photograph the figures for fear of misplacing them over time.
